Montréal Guitare Trio (MG3) and California Guitar Trio (CGT) are both powerhouse guitar trios independently. Now they have decided to link their passion, and their talent, in order to create a stunning evening of guitar music; a sextet made in Heaven. Luke McMaster Brings His Icons of Soul Project to Horizon Stage on November 17

Luke McMaster has a silky smooth voice that’s perfect for crooning, and he does a lot of that in his new show, Icons of Soul. Formerly one half of the gold-selling Canadian pop duo McMaster & James, Luke is taking the Motown and soul influences that have always filled his music to a new level. Icons of Soul uniquely marries contemporary songwriting with legendary hit songwriters.  Audiences will be treated to brand new music co-written with iconic R & B songwriters, hear fresh covers of some of Motown’s greatest hits, and enjoy favourites from Luke’s own catalogue, including his smash hit “Good Morning Beautiful” (#3 US Billboard AC). Multiple award-winning vocalist, trumpeter, and composer, Johnny Summers, strives to create a lasting and varied entertainment experience for his audiences. The Johnny Summers Little Big Band plays classic jazz, blues, soul, funk, pop, rock, New Orleans’ music and more. Drawing from Sinatra, pop culture including movie themes, video games, classic American songbook, and pop music through the decades, Summers’ unique arrangements appeal to a wide variety of music lovers. Making his home in Calgary, Johnny has created multiple groups and ensembles to aid his growth as a performer, composer, and arranger. From his first quartet in University to his current quartet, quintet, Little Big Band, and orchestra his goal is to reach out to people, bring joy, comment on the human condition, and connect through his musical passion in a fun and accessible way. Johnny also directs the Calgary Jazz Orchestra, which he founded in 2004, with the goal of bringing the highest quality of jazz music possible to Calgarians.

Experience the Music and Culture of Canada’s North

New North Collective Celebrate and Explore Their Traditional and Contemporary Roots at Horizon Stage on October 12

New North Collective is an ensemble of performing artists from Yukon and Northwest Territories who explore, create, and celebrate the music of Northern Canada. The current collective is made up of spoken word artist/bassist Pat Braden and composer/performer Carmen Braden from NWT; singer/songwriter Diyet from the Kluane First Nation, guitarist/songwriter Graeme Peters, and percussionist Robert Van Lieshout from Yukon; and guest artist, Leanne Goose, from Inuvik who is currently studying at MacEwan University. New North Collective are excited to be touring “Southern” Canada and to be performing at Horizon Stage on Friday, October 12 at 7:30 p.m.

The New North Collective came into being in 2015 after its members performed together in various configurations at multiple events and festivals. Everyone has successful individual music careers so they bring a diversity of styles, language, and experience to the collective. Together, they explore their ideas of north - from the land to the people; from the traditional to the contemporary. Their shared music takes an in-depth look at being a northern person and a northern artist with the impact of geography and community on the art they create collaboratively. Diverse and skillful, they cover a multitude of genres including jazz, folk, new music, spoken word, and rock.

Pat Braden previously performed at Horizon Stage in 2011. He is a soft-spoken storyteller and songwriter who weaves text with musical elements to paint exquisitely beautiful images of the northern land and its people. Pat studied at Grant MacEwan Community College and returned to Yellowknife in 1984 to perform with northern artists and bands both in the studio and on territorial and national stages.

Carmen Braden’s vocal, instrumental, and electroacoustic music is greatly tied to her soundscape. She draws from her environment by examining natural phenomena through sonic, visual, sensual and scientific ways of understanding. Her creative research has led her into deep study of ice on Great Slave Lake, as well as raven calls, bedrock, and different qualities of light. Carmen often collaborates with artists who work in other mediums like dance, theatre, film, and story-telling.

Diyet was born in a tent and was brought up on the ancestral lands of her people in Canada’s Yukon Territory. Coming from a family rooted in traditions but tempered with a good sense of adventurous hippie attitudes, she creates a musical presence that is as diverse as her Southern Tutchone, Tlingit, Japanese and Scottish heritage. She acquired a degree in music and is a published songwriter in Vancouver. When the pull of the North was too strong, she packed her bags, and her husband (co-performer Robert Van Lieshout) and moved back. Robert and Diyet also perform together in the band Diyet and the Love Soldiers. 

Graeme Peters is the lead member of Yukon's rock band Speed Control.  He has years of training in classical piano, attended the University of Toronto's prestigious Jazz Program, co-wrote a rock opera, and is a highly sought after touring and studio musician. Graeme has recorded and played with Tanya Tagaq and Canadian jazz greats Ingrid Jensen and Terry Promane. He was a member of the Peters Drury Trio when they performed at Horizon Stage 2002.

Leanne Goose is from Canada's Western Arctic town, Inuvik, Northwest Territories. An eclectic entertainer, Leanne wears many hats: singer/songwriter, musician, producer, arts and cultural manager, and storyteller. Her music is a combination of storytelling set to folk/country-blues and influences of her Inuvialuit and Dene culture. Her style is a reflection of the land and people she calls home; big, bold and ready for adventure.

Canadian Country Star Will Perform Her New Tribute Show at Horizon Stage on September 28 and October 1

Hot on the heels of The Patsy Cline Project, comes Lisa Brokop’s brand new show, Legendary Ladies of Country! This presentation features songs from many of the greatest female country singers of our time including Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Tanya Tucker, and Emmylou Harris. Lisa will tell stories about what these songs have meant to her and the influences that these ladies have had on her career. And, Lisa’s fans will enjoy hearing a few of her own hits as well! Originally scheduled for one show on Friday, September 28, tickets have sold so well (Friday is almost sold out) that Horizon Stage has added a second Legendary Ladies of Country performance on Monday, October 1 at 7:30 p.m.

In a day and age when many artists flicker for a moment before fading out of the spotlight, Lisa Brokop has spent over 20 remarkable years singing, songwriting and performing. What’s the secret to her success?  “I love what I do,” she says. “Every note I sing, whether in the studio or from the stage, is true.  It hasn’t always been an easy road. There have been many curves, bumps and detours.  But really, it is the love of the music that motivates each step I take in the business. It keeps me moving forward.  And I think fans feel and appreciate that love.”

Lisa’s love affair with performing began when she was very young. Even as a baby, it was clear that she was special—she was singing before she could talk! Growing up in suburban Vancouver, she joined her mother and brother on stage when she was seven, performing everything from polkas to Kenny Rogers’ classics. By age 12 Lisa was sitting in with other Vancouver bands, going professional at age 15 when she joined a touring band. A year later she began her solo career, releasing “Daddy Sing To Me”, the first successful single from her independent debut album, My Love, in 1991.

At the age of 19, Lisa landed the lead female role in the feature film Harmony Cats. The movie, in which she played a country singer who leaves home in search of a big break in Nashville, proved to be prophetic. Shortly after filming wrapped, and on the strength of her very first Nashville showcase, Lisa was signed to Capitol Records.

Lisa has had a string of hits including “Give Me a Ring Sometime”, “Take That”, “How Do I Let Go”, “Better off Broken”. “Let it Burn”, and “Love Me If You Can”.  She has earned multiple CCMA Awards, including two for Independent Song of the Year, and three for Independent Female Artist of the Year.  To date she has released nine albums and her songs have been recorded by Reba McEntire, Terri Clark, and Pam Tillis.

With original, funky tracks and cleverly covered classic R&B tunes, Vancouver’s Brickhouse blends classic and modern (Blue Funk) with an ease that makes hearing and seeing them an addictive experience. For 12 years, Brickhouse was the official late-night house band for Vancouver’s famous Yale Hotel. Annie Lou is the project of Anne Louise Genest, an artist who walks with the spirit of an old storyteller, creating songs steeped in the flavours of old-time mountain, Appalachian, traditional country, and bluegrass music. She has spent years chronicling the rural life-paths of Canada, writing songs that tell the tales of the hard-won victories of everyday men and women. Annie Lou has toured major festivals and venues across the country and has been nominated for a Juno and several Canadian Folk Music and Western Canadian Music awards. With humour, grace, and warmth, Annie Lou takes the stage with banjo and guitar, and invites you in to her colourful world of original music rooted in melodic traditions and delivered with an inspired energy and spark. Still/Falling Offers an Eye-Opening Look Inside The Teen Mental Health Crisis

Horizon Stage Presents Green Thumb Theatre’s Groundbreaking Play on Monday, March 19

Still/Falling tells the story of Nina. Nina has a great life. She loves her family, she does well in school, and her friends are awesome. But suddenly Nina starts feeling… off, and she finds herself slipping into a dark reality she cannot understand, let alone articulate to the people around her. Still/Falling follows Nina as she tries to come to terms with what it means to struggle with anxiety and depression, and to rise above it with as much strength, and as few scars, as possible. A realistic, honest, and bitingly funny look at the difference between ‘teen angst’ and mental illness and the ways vulnerable kids can start to find their way out of the dark. Horizon Stage is honoured to present Still/Falling on Monday, March 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Vancouver’s Green Thumb Theatre chose to produce Still/Falling to encourage conversation and awareness and to help students gain a deeper understanding of mental health, and especially how it can affect themselves and their peers. Green Thumb Theatre creates and produces plays that explore social issues relevant to the lives of children, youth and young adults. They provide theatre that celebrates the language and stories of today’s generation and culture to stimulate empathy, debate and critical thinking; challenging audiences to re-examine their beliefs and prejudices and to define their feelings and aspirations.

Mental illness indirectly affects all Canadians at some time through a family member, friend, or colleague and 20% of Canadians will personally experience a mental illness in their lifetime. Young Canadians are suffering from rising levels of anxiety, stress, depression and even suicide. The number of 12-19 year olds in Canada at risk for developing depression is a staggering 3.2 million. Once depression is recognized help can make a difference for 80% of people who are affected, allowing them to get back to their regular activities. But, sadly, in Canada only 1 out of 5 children who need mental health services receives them.

DuffleBag Theatre Brings A Giggle-Inducing Production of Robin Hood to Horizon Stage March 4

Known for their retellings of fairy tales and classic stories, DuffleBag Theatre is a Family Matinee favourite at Horizon Stage. This time around they’re re-working the legend of Robin Hood, and there are sure to be plenty of giggles and guffaws as they pull audience members up on stage and turn them into the stars of the show. Part scripted and part improvised, DuffleBag’s shows are filled with terrific twists, goofy antics, and loads of humour. They tickle kids’ funny bones and keep the grown-ups entertained too, not always an easy feat. Come play with DuffleBag Theatre at Horizon Stage on Sunday, March 4 at 2 p.m.

While the King is away, the people of England suffer under the oppressive rule of his tax-happy brother, Prince John. Only a straight arrow like Robin Hood, the best archer in the land, can save England! By stealing from the rich and giving back to the poor, Robin keeps the spirit of justice alive, with the help of a few friends along the way, including Maid Marian, Friar Tuck, and Little John. But what if the Prince and the dreaded Sheriff of Nottingham lay a trap for our hero? With all the humour and fun you come to expect, DuffleBag hits the mark with this on-target tale of derring-do!

Folk + Rock + Growl = Lion Bear Fox

Three powerful, honest, and soulful voices sing dynamic songs at Horizon Stage on March 3

One part folk, one part rock, with a pinch of gospel and a dash of growl, Vancouver’s Lion Bear Fox boasts acoustic guitars, buzzing electrics, and screaming keys. All of this is anchored by rich percussion and thrilling harmonies. With a name that is derived from their “spirit animals” this trio’s sound harkens back to an era when the song itself was paramount. Christopher Arruda, Cory Woodward, and Ryan McMahon were all solo artists who joined forces in 2012, released a CD together, and have been touring relentlessly ever since. Lion Bear Fox are looking forward to bringing their spirited rock/folk mix to Horizon Stage on Saturday, March 3.

Chris, Cory, and Ryan have three decades of solo career experience combined between them. At an impromptu show in Winnipeg in 2012 they started joining in on each other’s songs and quickly realized that it was time for a change; and thus Lion Bear Fox was born.  In 2013 Lion Bear Fox was selected as one of the top 20 unsigned bands in British Columbia as part of the Peak Performance Project. That same year they released their self-produced debut EP, We’d Be Good Men. Described as a musical force of nature that’s sure to be around for a lifetime, Lion Bear Fox have made appearances at Canadian Music Week, the Mission Folk Festival, and The Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver. They have shared stages with artists like Tom Wilson, Good For Grapes, Elliot Brood, and Kim Mitchell. In February 2017 they released their second CD, the self-titled Lion Bear Fox.

Proteus Saxophone Quartet Brings Energy and Intensity to Horizon Stage on February 17

Proteus Saxophone Quartet is redefining the traditional chamber music experience with their high energy, intense, and varied performances. Named after the god of the sea, Proteus Saxophone Quartet explores numerous instrumental combinations of the saxophone family through the creation and performance of chamber music. Proteus Saxophone Quartet is comprised of four Canadian saxophonists who met while living and studying in Paris in 2011. Since their formation they developed an immediate artistic bond and vision and have committed themselves to presenting lively, diverse, and beautiful concerts. As a quartet they have performed throughout Canada, France, and the United States and are happy to be performing in Alberta and Saskatchewan this month on a tour coordinated by Prairie Debut. Without adhering to a singular aesthetic or stylistic genre, Proteus Saxophone Quartet promotes collaboration with diverse artists in an attempt to advance new works for saxophone quartets. They work with composers or performers throughout the creation process. Their concert will include works from the classical saxophone canon, popular tunes, and transcriptions and arrangements of music written for other genres. By programming interesting and eclectic concerts, they aim to entertain and share with the public the history of the saxophone and saxophone quartet repertoire. Their programs are inspired by the saxophone’s capabilities and diversity, drawing from its early acceptance into popular and jazz music, as well as into the mainstream of the classical music genre.

As educators, Proteus Saxophone Quartet has performed school concerts and University masterclasses as part of their ongoing commitment to work with and promote chamber music to students. Often changing saxophones or staging during concerts, they benefit from these pauses by speaking to and connecting with their audiences by explaining concepts, ideas and working relationships which contribute to the compositions aimed at enhancing the concert experience. Quartet members Tommy Davis, Holly Caigny, Mark Michalak, and Michael Morimoto are all highly educated, well respected members of Canada’s chamber concert community.

Tommy Davis regularly performs on six members of the saxophone family. He has a Masters of Music from the Université de Montréal. Holly De Caigny received a Bachelor of Music from the University of British Columbia and a Masters degree in Calgary. She currently divides her time between Calgary and Edmonton where she is pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts in Saxophone Performance at the University of Alberta. Mark Michalak has a Masters of Music degree from the University of Calgary. He has competed in several international music competitions and is highly sought after as a performer, instructor, clinician, and conductor. Michael Morimoto started his musical studies in piano and switched to the saxophone. He received his Master of Music from the University of British Columbia and has been a featured soloist in many ensembles.

Silver Screen Scoundrels Pair Great Music with Vaudeville-Style Silent Films

Enjoy Live Country Blues, Gospel, Ragtime, Swing and Lots of Laughs at This Unique Show 

During the silent film era, from the 1890s to the late 1920s, a pianist, organist, or small orchestra played music to accompany films with no synchronized recorded sound or spoken dialogue. The Silver Screen Scoundrels perform original Country Blues, Gospel, Ragtime, and Swing music as accompaniment for their own, custom-produced, comedic black and white silent films. Horizon Stage is pleased to present the Silver Screen Scoundrels at a special weekday matinee concert on Thursday, February 8.

Brandon Isaak plays multiple instruments; guitars, harmonica, drums, kazoo and piano, but not all at the same time. He is the lead singer of the Silver Screen Scoundrels and writes most of the songs they perform. As a solo artist Brandon won a Maple Blues Award for Best Acoustic Performer in Canada. He has recorded several albums and has been nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award and multiple Maple Blues Awards. Besides performing with the Silver Screen Scoundrels, Brandon also performs as a "One Man Band", and with other musical friends. His most recent album was with Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne and Tim Williams. What separates Brandon from the rest of the pack is his ability to connect with and involve the audience.

Keith Picot plays bass with passion and backs up Brandon on vocals. He has won a Maple Blues Award for Best Bass Player in Canada and has performed with many other artists including Western Canada's Best Rockabilly Band, Cousin Harley who thrilled enthusiastic fans at Horizon Stage in 2015. Off stage, you can find Keith at his "Hek's Half Acre Silent Film Studio" where he writes, produces, and directs silent films.

80s rock music lovers rejoice! Horizon Stage is excited to present Women Who Rock, a remarkable concert that melds together two incredible tribute shows: Barracuda - The Essential Tribute to Heart, and All Fired Up - The Pat Benatar Experience. Put on your jelly bracelets, neon leg warmers, shoulder pads, and acid wash Guess jeans and tease your hair until it’s huge then rock the night away at Horizon Stage on Saturday, February 3.

Barracuda hails from Vancouver, BC, where they perform the music of Heart with style, presence, and a true passion for the songs that have become beloved classics to fans worldwide. The group is led by D.L .Car (Almost Ann), a four-octave vocal powerhouse and dedicated Ann Wilson purist. Donna's talents also extend to the flute and the guitar, fully authenticating the Ann Wilson persona. D.L. is supported by the multi-talented Layla Vaugeois (Nearly Nancy) who is from Edmonton and is the daughter of Rocko Vougeois of One Horse Blue. Layla brings her love for the music of Heart to life with her guitar and vocals. D.L. and Layla have an electric chemistry on stage. A Rare Opportunity to Hear James Gordon and Sons in Concert

When you get to experience a James Gordon and Sons concert, you get much more than just a ‘family band’, you get a fascinating hybrid of musical influences that makes for a unique and enjoyable evening. Evan and Geordie Gordon grew up playing along with their dad and his “Canadian Roots Music,” and they can be heard on most of his albums over the last 15 years. Often hired as a team since they play so many instruments, they tend to “rock James up” a bit and James tends to “Folkify them” when they are helping him with his material, so the result is always entertaining. It is getting to be too rare an opportunity to hear the three Gordons play together. Geordie and Evan are so busy with their own projects that have them touring throughout North America and Europe that their poor dad doesn’t get to entice them out onto the road as much. James’ most recent album on Borealis records “Sunny Jim” was produced by Evan and it reached #2 on the Canadian Roots Music Charts. The “boys” will be performing works from this project in their upcoming shows, and exploring the remarkable 40-album James Gordon back-catalogue of songs dealing with the Canadian landscape, heritage and identity, along with his popular works dealing with social justice and environmental issues, and they’ll dip into his collection of just plain silly songs from Gordon’s years as songwriter-in-residence on CBC’s “Basic Black” radio show.

As a songwriter, James is known for such diverse songs as “Harvest Train”, "Sweaters for Penguins" and "Frobisher Bay", which has been recorded by more than 100 different artists worldwide, and has become a standard for choirs everywhere. Tim Tamashiro’s New Show Celebrates the Rat Pack’s Friendships, Songs, and Stories

Three best friends: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr were the lead members of the Rat Pack; a group of entertainers centered on the Las Vegas casino scene in the 1960s. Tim Tamashiro’s new show, When You’re Smiling, is a tribute to the Rat Pack that celebrates their friendship, songs, and stories. Learn more about how Frank, Dean, and Sammy lived the high life, faced racism and gangsters, and sang incredible music. Get to know three of the most talented rascals to ever don tuxedos, through Tim Tamashiro, at Horizon Stage on Saturday, January 27 at 7:30 p.m.

Tim Tamashiro is one of Canada's most trusted voices in jazz. He graced airwaves nationally on CBC Radio 2’s Tonic for ten years, starting as the weekend host in 2007 and taking over full hosting duties six nights a week in 2012. An Alberta boy through and through, Tim grew up in Blackfalds, graduated from the Music Program at Red Deer College, worked in Edmonton, and now resides in Calgary with his wife and two children.

As an executive entertainer, Tim has sung for businesses, prime ministers, world leaders, and royalty; including Queen Elizabeth. In the 80s he co-founded the rock band The Mile High Club and in the 90s he was a member of jazz group The Swinging Bovines. Tim has released four CDs, including his most recent, Drinky, in 2016. He is also a keynote speaker.  Tim recently dove head first into the world of digital storytelling by starting a YouTube channel that focuses on living and learning, and a weekly podcast called “Hit Story” that tells the fascinating tales behind hit songs and the people who create them. Tim’s a bit of a music history buff…

When You’re Smiling is a replacement for Tim’s originally scheduled concert with Tommy Banks who has had to bow out of their tour for health reasons. Three musicians - playing base, piano, and drums - will join Tim onstage to help him showcase this ingenious time in music’s history - the era of the Rat Pack.
