Horizon Stage is excited to be presenting Johnny Summers Little Big Band on Friday, November 2 at 7:30 p.m.

Making his home in Calgary, Johnny has created multiple groups and ensembles to aid his growth as a performer, composer, and arranger. From his first quartet in University to his current quartet, quintet, Little Big Band, and orchestra his goal is to reach out to people, bring joy, comment on the human condition, and connect through his musical passion in a fun and accessible way. Johnny also directs the Calgary Jazz Orchestra, which he founded in 2004, with the goal of bringing the highest quality of jazz music possible to Calgarians.

Johnny’s musical abilities are accented by his capacity to bring wit, laughter, and soul to every performance. He has worked and performed with many world-renowned artists including Frankie Valli, the Temptations, Ellis Marsalis, Tommy Banks, and Maria Schneider. With musical influences like Stevie Wonder, John Mayer, Louis Armstrong, and Frank Sinatra, it comes as no surprise that he has something to offer everyone in the audience.

A master of versatility, in both style and mood, Johnny’s commitment to excellence is evidenced in the seamless performances he gives every time he steps onto a stage. Even after hundreds of concerts, and years of working diligently on his craft, he still sees every performance as sacred. Johnny’s hours of daily practice can easily go well into the night. One of his many gifts to his audience comes in the form of expecting nothing but the best from himself and his
musicians. The eight piece Johnny Summers Little Big Band is made up of some of Canada’s top professionals on piano, bass, drums, trumpet, two saxophones, and trombone, and, of course Johnny himself on vocals/trumpet.

Experience the Music and Culture of Canada’s North

New North Collective Celebrate and Explore Their Traditional and Contemporary Roots at Horizon Stage on October 12

New North Collective is an ensemble of performing artists from Yukon and Northwest Territories who explore, create, and celebrate the music of Northern Canada. The current collective is made up of spoken word artist/bassist Pat Braden and composer/performer Carmen Braden from NWT; singer/songwriter Diyet from the Kluane First Nation, guitarist/songwriter Graeme Peters, and percussionist Robert Van Lieshout from Yukon; and guest artist, Leanne Goose, from Inuvik who is currently studying at MacEwan University. New North Collective are excited to be touring “Southern” Canada and to be performing at Horizon Stage on Friday, October 12 at 7:30 p.m.

The New North Collective came into being in 2015 after its members performed together in various configurations at multiple events and festivals. Everyone has successful individual music careers so they bring a diversity of styles, language, and experience to the collective. Together, they explore their ideas of north - from the land to the people; from the traditional to the contemporary. Their shared music takes an in-depth look at being a northern person and a northern artist with the impact of geography and community on the art they create collaboratively. Diverse and skillful, they cover a multitude of genres including jazz, folk, new music, spoken word, and rock.

Pat Braden previously performed at Horizon Stage in 2011. He is a soft-spoken storyteller and songwriter who weaves text with musical elements to paint exquisitely beautiful images of the northern land and its people. Pat studied at Grant MacEwan Community College and returned to Yellowknife in 1984 to perform with northern artists and bands both in the studio and on territorial and national stages.

Carmen Braden’s vocal, instrumental, and electroacoustic music is greatly tied to her soundscape. She draws from her environment by examining natural phenomena through sonic, visual, sensual and scientific ways of understanding. Her creative research has led her into deep study of ice on Great Slave Lake, as well as raven calls, bedrock, and different qualities of light. Carmen often collaborates with artists who work in other mediums like dance, theatre, film, and story-telling.

Diyet was born in a tent and was brought up on the ancestral lands of her people in Canada’s Yukon Territory. Coming from a family rooted in traditions but tempered with a good sense of adventurous hippie attitudes, she creates a musical presence that is as diverse as her Southern Tutchone, Tlingit, Japanese and Scottish heritage. She acquired a degree in music and is a published songwriter in Vancouver. When the pull of the North was too strong, she packed her bags, and her husband (co-performer Robert Van Lieshout) and moved back. Robert and Diyet also perform together in the band Diyet and the Love Soldiers

Graeme Peters is the lead member of Yukon's rock band Speed Control.  He has years of training in classical piano, attended the University of Toronto's prestigious Jazz Program, co-wrote a rock opera, and is a highly sought after touring and studio musician. Graeme has recorded and played with Tanya Tagaq and Canadian jazz greats Ingrid Jensen and Terry Promane. He was a member of the Peters Drury Trio when they performed at Horizon Stage 2002.

Leanne Goose is from Canada's Western Arctic town, Inuvik, Northwest Territories. An eclectic entertainer, Leanne wears many hats: singer/songwriter, musician, producer, arts and cultural manager, and storyteller. Her music is a combination of storytelling set to folk/country-blues and influences of her Inuvialuit and Dene culture. Her style is a reflection of the land and people she calls home; big, bold and ready for adventure.

Specifically designed to discard stereotypes and push boundaries, New North Collective’s multi-media show is simultaneously crowd-pleasing and thought-provoking. Experience all that is New North Collective at Horizon Stage on Friday, October 12 at 7:30 p.m. - tickets are $35 for Adults and $30 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through Ticketpro.ca.

Lisa Brokop Presents: Legendary Ladies of Country

Canadian Country Star Will Perform Her New Tribute Show at Horizon Stage on September 28 and October 1

Hot on the heels of The Patsy Cline Project, comes Lisa Brokop’s brand new show, Legendary Ladies of Country! This presentation features songs from many of the greatest female country singers of our time including Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Tanya Tucker, and Emmylou Harris. Lisa will tell stories about what these songs have meant to her and the influences that these ladies have had on her career. And, Lisa’s fans will enjoy hearing a few of her own hits as well! Originally scheduled for one show on Friday, September 28, tickets have sold so well (Friday is almost sold out) that Horizon Stage has added a second Legendary Ladies of Country performance on Monday, October 1 at 7:30 p.m.

In a day and age when many artists flicker for a moment before fading out of the spotlight, Lisa Brokop has spent over 20 remarkable years singing, songwriting and performing. What’s the secret to her success?  “I love what I do,” she says. “Every note I sing, whether in the studio or from the stage, is true.  It hasn’t always been an easy road. There have been many curves, bumps and detours.  But really, it is the love of the music that motivates each step I take in the business. It keeps me moving forward.  And I think fans feel and appreciate that love.”

Lisa’s love affair with performing began when she was very young. Even as a baby, it was clear that she was special—she was singing before she could talk! Growing up in suburban Vancouver, she joined her mother and brother on stage when she was seven, performing everything from polkas to Kenny Rogers’ classics. By age 12 Lisa was sitting in with other Vancouver bands, going professional at age 15 when she joined a touring band. A year later she began her solo career, releasing “Daddy Sing To Me”, the first successful single from her independent debut album, My Love, in 1991.

At the age of 19, Lisa landed the lead female role in the feature film Harmony Cats. The movie, in which she played a country singer who leaves home in search of a big break in Nashville, proved to be prophetic. Shortly after filming wrapped, and on the strength of her very first Nashville showcase, Lisa was signed to Capitol Records.

Lisa has had a string of hits including “Give Me a Ring Sometime”, “Take That”, “How Do I Let Go”, “Better off Broken”. “Let it Burn”, and “Love Me If You Can”.  She has earned multiple CCMA Awards, including two for Independent Song of the Year, and three for Independent Female Artist of the Year.  To date she has released nine albums and her songs have been recorded by Reba McEntire, Terri Clark, and Pam Tillis.

Lisa’s first tribute show, The Patsy Cline Project, sold out two performances and was a huge hit at Horizon Stage in 2016 and staff and fans are happy to welcome her back! Tickets for Legendary Ladies of Country are $40 for Adults and $35 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through Ticketpro.ca.

Vancouver’s Hippest Funk Band Tours to Spruce Grove

Brickhouse Brings Their Original Blues, Funk, and Classic R & B Covers to Horizon Stage on Friday, April 27

With original, funky tracks and cleverly covered classic R&B tunes, Vancouver’s Brickhouse blends classic and modern (Blue Funk) with an ease that makes hearing and seeing them an addictive experience. For 12 years, Brickhouse was the official late-night house band for Vancouver’s famous Yale Hotel. It was on the Yale stage and through their popular Blues Cruise harbor tour concerts, that they built a legion of fans as diverse as you can get: hipsters, university students, baby boomers, tourists, and other musicians. Everyone who has experienced the band live has grown to love their brand of groovy, bluesy, funky music. Horizon Stage is excited to offer the Brickhouse experience to local fans on Friday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m.

Known for almost-hypnotically melding the mind, body, and soul, Brickhouse audiences become part of a fantastic live music experience. With a list of original material that rivals the number of keys on a full size piano, they deliver a message that attracts the young at heart. The Brickhouse experience is inclusive, not exclusive, which means all are welcome to the party! With over 1000 members on their facebook fan page, and 200+ live shows a year, it’s no wonder that it sometimes feels like their fans choose the set list. Rob Bracken (lead vocals and harmonica), Ray Keesh (bass guitar), Ed Johnson (drums, percussion, and backing vocals), Oldrich (OZ) Zitek (saxophone and backing vocals), Neil Cruickshank (guitar and backing vocals) and Darryl Havers (Hammond organ, keyboards, and backing vocals), put on an intense show full of great tunes that will get inside your head and stay there.

In 2016 Brickhouse recorded their most recent CD, Future. Going into the studio was a great bonding experience for Rob, Ray, Neil, Darryl, Oz and Ed. It energized the band as they celebrated over a decade of making great music together. Future is a collection of songs that grew out of gigging and collaborating live and, although Rob wrote just about every one, the band gave each other enough space to let their individual musicianship affect the overall vibe of every tune. That IS Brickhouse’s brand.

Seeing Brickhouse live is considered one of the Top 10 coolest things you can do in Vancouver and now it’s also one of the coolest things that you can do in the Edmonton area. Catch them at Horizon Stage in Spruce Grove on Friday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 for Adults and $30 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through Ticketpro.ca.

"These guys never get boring!  Whether or not you have got the blues or the rhythm,
make it your mandate to experience some (of their) soulful R&B…”
- John Tanner, Vancouver Observer

“For a guaranteed draw and a happy crowd, it’s a ‘lock’ with Brickhouse."
- Keith Alexander, AD, Edge of the World Music Festival

Annie Lou Stops in Spruce Grove on Their ‘End Zone’ CD Release Tour

Juno Nominated Folk and Bluegrass Band Scheduled to Perform at Horizon Stage on Friday, March 23

Annie Lou is the project of Anne Louise Genest, an artist who walks with the spirit of an old storyteller, creating songs steeped in the flavours of old-time mountain, Appalachian, traditional country, and bluegrass music. She has spent years chronicling the rural life-paths of Canada, writing songs that tell the tales of the hard-won victories of everyday men and women. Annie Lou has toured major festivals and venues across the country and has been nominated for a Juno and several Canadian Folk Music and Western Canadian Music awards. Horizon Stage is pleased to present Annie Lou on Friday, March 23 at 7:30 p.m.

With humour, grace, and warmth, Annie Lou takes the stage with banjo and guitar, and invites you in to her colourful world of original music rooted in melodic traditions and delivered with an inspired energy and spark. She paints vibrant musical landscapes where you can laugh, cry, dance, reflect and connect with ballads, tunes, and songs inspired by lives and times and ups and downs. Her beautifully creative songs range from rousing and boisterous to gentle and poignant. They map a homescape of hard-drinking grandmas, rural dancehalls, blue collar fashions, small towns, and big cities. All are delivered with Genest’s vocal warmth; evocative of the sweet tones of Kate and Anna McGarrigle blended with the raw emotion of Hazel Dickens.

Annie Lou is releasing her fourth album, End Zone, a gorgeous collection of new songs that draw deep from the well, filling the bucket with rich melody and wry wisdom. No, it’s not about football. Most of the material for the album was written during the last months of her mother's life, and the title track is an exploration of that time when the end is near, but not quite. The album features a guest cast of Canadian acoustic innovators, including Andrew Collins on mandolin and guitar, Max Heineman on upright bass and vocals, Sarah Hamilton on fiddle and vocals, John Showman and Trent Freeman on fiddle, Frank Evans on banjo, Burke Carroll on pedal steel, and Ivan Rosenberg on dobro. Real, raw, and deeply honest, End Zone is a magical addition to the Annie Lou catalogue.

Annie Lou is headed out on a Western Canada CD Release tour this month, with Collins, Hamilton, and Heineman in tow. Together they are a tight vocal and instrumental unit that offers superb musicianship and an infectious delight in their craft. In live performance the band gallops along with joyful danceable precision, enticing audiences with twin fiddles, banjo, three and four part harmonies, call and response, and compelling instrumental solos.

Touring B.C., Saskatchewan, and Alberta, Annie Lou’s only concert in the Edmonton area will be at Horizon Stage in Spruce Grove on Friday, March 23 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 for Adults and $30 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through Ticketpro.ca.

“Genest’s remarkable songwriting about the tales of rural Canadiana…
(they) move across a range of emotions and each evokes the right texture."

Still/Falling Offers an Eye-Opening Look Inside The Teen Mental Health Crisis

Horizon Stage Presents Green Thumb Theatre’s Groundbreaking Play on Monday, March 19

Still/Falling tells the story of Nina. Nina has a great life. She loves her family, she does well in school, and her friends are awesome. But suddenly Nina starts feeling… off, and she finds herself slipping into a dark reality she cannot understand, let alone articulate to the people around her. Still/Falling follows Nina as she tries to come to terms with what it means to struggle with anxiety and depression, and to rise above it with as much strength, and as few scars, as possible. A realistic, honest, and bitingly funny look at the difference between ‘teen angst’ and mental illness and the ways vulnerable kids can start to find their way out of the dark. Horizon Stage is honoured to present Still/Falling on Monday, March 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Vancouver’s Green Thumb Theatre chose to produce Still/Falling to encourage conversation and awareness and to help students gain a deeper understanding of mental health, and especially how it can affect themselves and their peers. Green Thumb Theatre creates and produces plays that explore social issues relevant to the lives of children, youth and young adults. They provide theatre that celebrates the language and stories of today’s generation and culture to stimulate empathy, debate and critical thinking; challenging audiences to re-examine their beliefs and prejudices and to define their feelings and aspirations.

Mental illness indirectly affects all Canadians at some time through a family member, friend, or colleague and 20% of Canadians will personally experience a mental illness in their lifetime. Young Canadians are suffering from rising levels of anxiety, stress, depression and even suicide. The number of 12-19 year olds in Canada at risk for developing depression is a staggering 3.2 million. Once depression is recognized help can make a difference for 80% of people who are affected, allowing them to get back to their regular activities. But, sadly, in Canada only 1 out of 5 children who need mental health services receives them.

If you work with teenagers, love a teenager, or are a teenager then you must see Still/Falling at Horizon Stage on Monday, March 19. Tickets are $10 for all ages and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, or online through Ticketpro.ca. Seating is general admission and the show is recommended for ages 12+.  Running time is 50 minutes. There will be a question and answer period with the artist after the show. Still/Falling is presented in partnership with Spruce Grove and Stony Plain FCSS. If ticket price is a barrier, subsidies are available for eligible families by calling 780-962-7618 in Spruce Grove or 780-963-8583 in Stony Plain.

“This performance is a bold, moving, and compelling portrayal of a typical adolescent girl struggling
with anxiety and depressions. I was impressed by the quality and accuracy
of the mental health messages communicated throughout the play…”
- Ekin Blackwell, Clinical Psychologist, Anxiety BC

“This is an incredibly important work - not just for teens to see- but I think necessary for parents to see… if parents of young people could see this play they might be moved… to offer help and understanding to their children instead of getting mad at them.”
- Deborah Roberts, Parent

Twists and Turns, A Dashing Hero, and a Dastardly Villain

DuffleBag Theatre Brings A Giggle-Inducing Production of Robin Hood to Horizon Stage March 4

Known for their retellings of fairy tales and classic stories, DuffleBag Theatre is a Family Matinee favourite at Horizon Stage. While the King is away, the people of England suffer under the oppressive rule of his tax-happy brother, Prince John. By stealing from the rich and giving back to the poor, Robin keeps the spirit of justice alive, with the help of a few friends along the way, including Maid Marian, Friar Tuck, and Little John. But what if the Prince and the dreaded Sheriff of Nottingham lay a trap for our hero? With all the humour and fun you come to expect, DuffleBag hits the mark with this on-target tale of derring-do!

Since 1992, The "Nearly World-Famous" DuffleBag Theatre has traveled the globe, performing over 600 shows annually at theatres, schools, and festivals across North America and beyond! There are over 15 different shows in the company's current repertoire and all are performed with the same sense of fun, innovation, and participation that audiences (almost) the world over have come to expect! Called one of the most exciting and fun phenomena to come out of the vibrant Canadian children’s entertainment scene. DuffleBag works to build their young audience’s love of the basic stories of our culture, readying them for imaginative maturity. Past DuffleBag productions in Spruce Grove include Robin Hood (2009), Cinderella (2013), and Snow White (2016). And while their shows are recommended for kids aged 4 -10, no matter what your age, you’re going to have a good time and enjoy some belly laughs if you come to see them.

Enjoy an amusing interactive Family Matinee theatre experience at Horizon Stage on Sunday, March 4 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 for all ages and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through Ticketpro.ca. Folk + Rock + Growl = Lion Bear Fox

Three powerful, honest, and soulful voices sing dynamic songs at Horizon Stage on March 3

One part folk, one part rock, with a pinch of gospel and a dash of growl, Vancouver’s Lion Bear Fox boasts acoustic guitars, buzzing electrics, and screaming keys. All of this is anchored by rich percussion and thrilling harmonies. With a name that is derived from their “spirit animals” this trio’s sound harkens back to an era when the song itself was paramount. Christopher Arruda, Cory Woodward, and Ryan McMahon were all solo artists who joined forces in 2012, released a CD together, and have been touring relentlessly ever since. Lion Bear Fox are looking forward to bringing their spirited rock/folk mix to Horizon Stage on Saturday, March 3.

Chris, Cory, and Ryan have three decades of solo career experience combined between them. At an impromptu show in Winnipeg in 2012 they started joining in on each other’s songs and quickly realized that it was time for a change; and thus Lion Bear Fox was born.  In 2013 Lion Bear Fox was selected as one of the top 20 unsigned bands in British Columbia as part of the Peak Performance Project. That same year they released their self-produced debut EP, We’d Be Good Men. Described as a musical force of nature that’s sure to be around for a lifetime, Lion Bear Fox have made appearances at Canadian Music Week, the Mission Folk Festival, and The Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver. They have shared stages with artists like Tom Wilson, Good For Grapes, Elliot Brood, and Kim Mitchell. In February 2017 they released their second CD, the self-titled Lion Bear Fox.

“When we perform, people experience three powerful, honest and soulful voices that will take them on a roller coaster ride of dynamically pleasing songs,” says Woodward. “Each one’s a journey, and we welcome everyone with open arms to dance wild, scream and sing into the night and experience one of the greatest self-made gifts we can give ourselves, pure uninhibited joy.”

Ride Lion Bear Fox’s rumbling musical roller coaster at Horizon Stage on Saturday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 for Adults and $30 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through Ticketpro.ca.

“One of the most appealing things about this group, is how easily they seem to meld so many different genres of music into their sound without it feeling overwhelming.”

Not Your Average Chamber Music Ensemble

Proteus Saxophone Quartet Brings Energy and Intensity to Horizon Stage on February 17

Proteus Saxophone Quartet is redefining the traditional chamber music experience with their high energy, intense, and varied performances. Named after the god of the sea, Proteus Saxophone Quartet explores numerous instrumental combinations of the saxophone family through the creation and performance of chamber music. Proteus Saxophone Quartet is comprised of four Canadian saxophonists who met while living and studying in Paris in 2011. Since their formation they developed an immediate artistic bond and vision and have committed themselves to presenting lively, diverse, and beautiful concerts. As a quartet they have performed throughout Canada, France, and the United States and are happy to be performing in Alberta and Saskatchewan this month on a tour coordinated by Prairie Debut. Experience Proteus Saxophone Quartet Up Close and Personal at Horizon Stage on Saturday, February 17, 2018.

Without adhering to a singular aesthetic or stylistic genre, Proteus Saxophone Quartet promotes collaboration with diverse artists in an attempt to advance new works for saxophone quartets. They work with composers or performers throughout the creation process. Their concert will include works from the classical saxophone canon, popular tunes, and transcriptions and arrangements of music written for other genres. By programming interesting and eclectic concerts, they aim to entertain and share with the public the history of the saxophone and saxophone quartet repertoire. Their programs are inspired by the saxophone’s capabilities and diversity, drawing from its early acceptance into popular and jazz music, as well as into the mainstream of the classical music genre.

As educators, Proteus Saxophone Quartet has performed school concerts and University masterclasses as part of their ongoing commitment to work with and promote chamber music to students. Often changing saxophones or staging during concerts, they benefit from these pauses by speaking to and connecting with their audiences by explaining concepts, ideas and working relationships which contribute to the compositions aimed at enhancing the concert experience. Quartet members Tommy Davis, Holly Caigny, Mark Michalak, and Michael Morimoto are all highly educated, well respected members of Canada’s chamber concert community.

Tommy Davis regularly performs on six members of the saxophone family. He has a Masters of Music from the Université de Montréal. Holly De Caigny received a Bachelor of Music from the University of British Columbia and a Masters degree in Calgary. She currently divides her time between Calgary and Edmonton where she is pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts in Saxophone Performance at the University of Alberta. Mark Michalak has a Masters of Music degree from the University of Calgary. He has competed in several international music competitions and is highly sought after as a performer, instructor, clinician, and conductor. Silver Screen Scoundrels Pair Great Music with Vaudeville-Style Silent Films

Enjoy Live Country Blues, Gospel, Ragtime, Swing and Lots of Laughs at This Unique Show

During the silent film era, from the 1890s to the late 1920s, a pianist, organist, or small orchestra played music to accompany films with no synchronized recorded sound or spoken dialogue. The Silver Screen Scoundrels perform original Country Blues, Gospel, Ragtime, and Swing music as accompaniment for their own, custom-produced, comedic black and white silent films. Horizon Stage is pleased to present the Silver Screen Scoundrels at a special weekday matinee concert on Thursday, February 8.

Brandon Isaak plays multiple instruments; guitars, harmonica, drums, kazoo and piano, but not all at the same time. He is the lead singer of the Silver Screen Scoundrels and writes most of the songs they perform. As a solo artist Brandon won a Maple Blues Award for Best Acoustic Performer in Canada. He has recorded several albums and has been nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award and multiple Maple Blues Awards. Besides performing with the Silver Screen Scoundrels, Brandon also performs as a "One Man Band", and with other musical friends. His most recent album was with Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne and Tim Williams. What separates Brandon from the rest of the pack is his ability to connect with and involve the audience.

Keith Picot plays bass with passion and backs up Brandon on vocals. He has won a Maple Blues Award for Best Bass Player in Canada and has performed with many other artists including Western Canada's Best Rockabilly Band, Cousin Harley who thrilled enthusiastic fans at Horizon Stage in 2015. Off stage, you can find Keith at his "Hek's Half Acre Silent Film Studio" where he writes, produces, and directs silent films.

Re-live the classic silent film era with a modern twist. Don’t miss The Silver Screen Scoundrels at Horizon Stage on Thursday, February 8 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $25 for all ages and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through Ticketpro.ca.

An impressive multi-sensory experience was enjoyed by those who attended… Brandon Isaak and Keith Picot had the audience rolling with laughter with their candid humour and interaction… It’s a show that shouldn’t be missed.”
- Quesnel Observer

They are a modern portal back through time, down the telegraph wires of entertainment. Their show is more than a tribute concert to a bygone era. It is a multimedia, multisensory mashup of movies on a screen
that help tell the story of the music on the stage.”
- Prince George Citizen

"The Silver Screen Scoundrels' free-wheeling, lively, energetic multi-media performance of blues and roots music was a real  delight

Horizon Stage Presents Women Who Rock on Saturday, February 3

80s rock music lovers rejoice! Horizon Stage is excited to present Women Who Rock, a remarkable concert that melds together two incredible tribute shows: Barracuda - The Essential Tribute to Heart, and All Fired Up - The Pat Benatar Experience. Put on your jelly bracelets, neon leg warmers, shoulder pads, and acid wash Guess jeans and tease your hair until it’s huge then rock the night away at Horizon Stage on Saturday, February 3.

Barracuda hails from Vancouver, BC, where they perform the music of Heart with style, presence, and a true passion for the songs that have become beloved classics to fans worldwide. The group is led by D.L .Car (Almost Ann), a four-octave vocal powerhouse and dedicated Ann Wilson purist. Donna's talents also extend to the flute and the guitar, fully authenticating the Ann Wilson persona. D.L. is supported by the multi-talented Layla Vaugeois (Nearly Nancy) who is from Edmonton and is the daughter of Rocko Vougeois of One Horse Blue. Layla brings her love for the music of Heart to life with her guitar and vocals. D.L. and Layla have an electric chemistry on stage. Both are fully dedicated to recreating the experience that is Heart, covering hits such as "Crazy on You", "Magic Man", "All I Wanna Do is Make Love to You", and "Stranded".

All Fired Up - The Pat Benatar Experience is an exact and precise tribute to the iconic singer Benatar and her partner Neil Geraldo who have been rock n' roll mainstays for over 40 years. D.L .Car has been singing Benatar’s songs for 30 years. Not only does she nail the vocals she also has the stage presence dialed in as she performs such classic songs as “Hit Me with Your Best Shot”, “Heartbreaker”, “Love is a Battlefield”, and “Treat Me Right”.

Backing Barracuda and All Fired Up are three professionally seasoned musicians, Ray Roper, Curtis Michael Leippi, and Kevin Stuart Swain, who are dedicated to providing an authentic musical experience heard in the subtle nuances and rock solid delivery of their performances. With Heart's 2013 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Benatar’s 2016: We Live For Love Tour with Melissa Etheridge, the music of both artists has maintained its popularity. Demand for quality tribute shows like Barracuda - The Essential Tribute to Heart, and All Fired Up - The Pat Benatar Experience has never been higher. A Rare Opportunity to Hear James Gordon and Sons in Concert

Horizon Stage is Pleased to Present Esteemed Canadian Folk Musician on Friday, February 2

When you get to experience a James Gordon and Sons concert, you get much more than just a ‘family band’, you get a fascinating hybrid of musical influences that makes for a unique and enjoyable evening. Evan and Geordie Gordon grew up playing along with their dad and his “Canadian Roots Music,” and they can be heard on most of his albums over the last 15 years. Often hired as a team since they play so many instruments, they tend to “rock James up” a bit and James tends to “Folkify them” when they are helping him with his material, so the result is always entertaining. It is getting to be too rare an opportunity to hear the three Gordons play together. Geordie and Evan are so busy with their own projects that have them touring throughout North America and Europe that their poor dad doesn’t get to entice them out onto the road as much. It’s for this reason that Horizon Stage is excited to be presenting James Gordon and Sons on Friday, February 2 at 7:30 p.m.

James’ most recent album on Borealis records “Sunny Jim” was produced by Evan and it reached #2 on the Canadian Roots Music Charts. The “boys” will be performing works from this project in their upcoming shows, and exploring the remarkable 40-album James Gordon back-catalogue of songs dealing with the Canadian landscape, heritage and identity, along with his popular works dealing with social justice and environmental issues, and they’ll dip into his collection of just plain silly songs from Gordon’s years as songwriter-in-residence on CBC’s “Basic Black” radio show.

As a songwriter, James is known for such diverse songs as “Harvest Train”, "Sweaters for Penguins" and "Frobisher Bay", which has been recorded by more than 100 different artists worldwide, and has become a standard for choirs everywhere. Other artists including Cowboy Junkies, Melanie Doane, Al Simmons, and James Keelaghan have covered James’ songs.

If you’re a “folkie”, a “rootsie”, or even a “rockie” you don’t want to miss this a one-of-a-kind, hard to come by, sure to be entertaining, concert by James Gordon and Sons at Horizon Stage on Friday, February 2 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 for Adults and $30 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online at ticketpro.ca.

If You Love Frank, Dean, or Sammy, When You’re Smiling Is For You

Tim Tamashiro’s New Show Celebrates the Rat Pack’s Friendships, Songs, and Stories

Three best friends: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr were the lead members of the Rat Pack; a group of entertainers centered on the Las Vegas casino scene in the 1960s. Tim Tamashiro’s new show, When You’re Smiling, is a tribute to the Rat Pack that celebrates their friendship, songs, and stories. Learn more about how Frank, Dean, and Sammy lived the high life, faced racism and gangsters, and sang incredible music. Get to know three of the most talented rascals to ever don tuxedos, through Tim Tamashiro, at Horizon Stage on Saturday, January 27 at 7:30 p.m.

Tim Tamashiro is one of Canada's most trusted voices in jazz. He graced airwaves nationally on CBC Radio 2’s Tonic for ten years, starting as the weekend host in 2007 and taking over full hosting duties six nights a week in 2012. An Alberta boy through and through, Tim grew up in Blackfalds, graduated from the Music Program at Red Deer College, worked in Edmonton, and now resides in Calgary with his wife and two children.

As an executive entertainer, Tim has sung for businesses, prime ministers, world leaders, and royalty; including Queen Elizabeth. In the 80s he co-founded the rock band The Mile High Club and in the 90s he was a member of jazz group The Swinging Bovines. Tim has released four CDs, including his most recent, Drinky, in 2016. He is also a keynote speaker.  Tim recently dove head first into the world of digital storytelling by starting a YouTube channel that focuses on living and learning, and a weekly podcast called “Hit Story” that tells the fascinating tales behind hit songs and the people who create them. Tim’s a bit of a music history buff…

When You’re Smiling is a replacement for Tim’s originally scheduled concert with Tommy Banks who has had to bow out of their tour for health reasons. Three musicians - playing base, piano, and drums - will join Tim onstage to help him showcase this ingenious time in music’s history - the era of the Rat Pack.

Enjoy an evening of great songs, cold drinks, and bad jokes with Tim Tamashiro’s When You’re Smiling at Horizon Stage on Saturday, January 27 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 for Adults and $30 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through Ticketpro.ca.

His fabulous tenor voice ranges from South America, to authentic Irish folk, to great romantic Italian songs and arias. Referred to as “a credible Pavarotti stand-in”, he has appeared in leading roles in numerous opera and theatre productions. Peter was a member of The Toronto Symphony Orchestra for 11 years.

Alexander Sevastian (accordion, piano, bandoneon) joined Quartetto Gelato in 2002. Born in Minsk, Belarus, Alex began his studies on the accordion at the age of seven. In addition to oboe, he also plays clarinet, English horn, bassoon, violin, 5-string banjo, acoustic/electric bass, piano, saxophone, flute, guitar, mandolin and musical saw.

Liza McLellan (cello) works with numerous orchestras and chamber ensembles throughout Ontario, has performed as a soloist and chamber musician across North America, and has toured to China and Korea. “Equal parts of musicianship, showmanship and what might be called “laughmanship” marked the lively quartet’s witty, wide-ranging program.”
Des Moines Register

“Quartetto Gelato does it again, proving that they are indeed the “Cirque du Soleil” of classical music – always fresh, full of surprises, constantly re-inventing.”
Michael Lyons, Classical 96.3FM

“Quartetto Gelato’s performances have a warm, endearing vitality….”

Holiday Ticket Sale

The staff at Horizon Stage have decided to jump start the holiday revelry, we're holding a Holiday Ticket Sale. We’ve always said that tickets make great gifts or stocking stuffers, so we’re looking to help you by offering some great discounts on select shows in the new year.
The first sale item is the performance of James Gordon and Sons, Friday, February 2. This one is an extra-special 2 for 1 price. James and his sons have been making Canadian folk music together for years, and I know there are some folkies in our audience – so here’s your chance to bring a friend and reminisce. Bring on the fringed leather vests and long hair, you are welcome here, my friends!
The rest of the offers are 20% off tickets:
Silver Screen Scoundrels, Thursday, February 8 at 2 p.m. I specifically mention the time because it is a Thursday afternoon and it’s important to know that before you buy the tickets. It’s the fourth year we’ve presented a show in this time slot, and it has proven to be very popular with our older audiences. Seniors’ groups, tours from Westlock, and lots of retired patrons love to come in the afternoon, when they have access to specialized transit or other options. This year, the Silver Screen Scoundrels are going to entertain you with wonderful silent films to go along with their live music. I first saw this act a couple of years ago, and I thought it was brilliant. Here you have two incredibly talented musicians, playing their instruments as a soundtrack to silent films they have written, starred in, and are showing behind them. It’s really a unique experience – blending visual with what we hear, and doing it all with a sense of humour.

Proteus Saxophone Quartet, Saturday, February 17. I’ll admit, a saxophone quartet is a pretty specific genre, and it’s going to have a specific audience. We encourage anyone who is studying an instrument to consider this show – especially those in a junior high or high school band. It’s important for them to hear music presented in a new way, to expand their own knowledge, and to experience professional musicians in their own community. Student or not, the quartet will have you marveling at the diversity of music the saxophones can produce.

Lion Bear Fox, Saturday, March 3. I know, I’m not really supposed to “pick favourites” in the season. But if I’m being really honest with you, this trio is among my top picks this year. I saw them in Vancouver at a conference, in a theatre even cozier than ours. From the minute they picked up their instruments I knew there was something special going on. These three men, all with solo careers of their own, decided to join forces and create music together. Because of their own individual strengths, the trio has a powerful dynamic and stage presence. The stories they tell through music are strong and easy to connect with, and they range from fun and lighthearted (“Freedom” is actually about a lady down the street who gave them popsicles in the summer as kids) to the stunning (the acoustic version of “Home” they did gives me goosebumps every time I think about it). The band is named for each member’s “spirit animal”. You have to see them to understand it. Who is the Bear? Who is the Fox? And the remaining one must be the Lion. This show is my birthday present to me. I hope you’ll come share it with me.

DuffleBag Theatre: Robin Hood, Sunday, March 4 at 2 p.m. The final Family Matinee in this season, DuffleBag is an audience favourite. Simple concepts, some creative costumes and props, and a genuine love of sharing theatre with children – that’s their slam-dunk recipe. No flashy special effects, no big soundtrack, just storytelling at its most… creative. Each of the fairy tales they perform are well known to their audiences, but with DuffleBag that’s just the beginning. Audience participation is key to the show, because at some point the show needs a hero, a villain, and a lot of supporting characters. Last time they were here one lucky young lady got to be Snow White – the lead role, plucked right out of the seats! I love watching the kids at DuffleBag shows, but just as often I’m watching the parents. Pure delight and enjoyment. What more can I say?

Brickhouse, Friday, April 27. This will be the final show in our 35th year. What a great way to end the season – funk and R&B music that will make you happy to be alive. I will share something about me – I simply have a really hard time sitting still when there’s good music playing, and every time I listen to Brickhouse I find myself dancing in my chair. If these guys were a local Edmonton band, I would go out dancing a whole lot more, believe me! They’re a tight band, full of energy and enthusiasm, and I dare say it’s going to close the season with a bang. Take a chance – you’re unlikely to regret it.

So, because this is a Holiday Ticket Sale, these deals are available for a limited time only. Between now and December 31, to be precise. It’s easy to get in on the special prices: phone us at the City Hall Ticket Centre Monday – Friday 9-4:30 at 780-962-8995 or come see us in person. After hours, or while our office is closed over the holidays (December 22 at noon through January 1 inclusive) you can call Ticketpro at 1-888-655-9090. Or, if your fingers are itching to make the transaction themselves, online purchases are available all day and night, in your jammies while sipping a lovely beverage. All the ticket links are at horizonstage.com. One last thing – you will need a Promo code to get your amazing prices. Either online, or talking to a person, you’ll have to know this super-secret password. Ready? The password is: GIFT

We hope this helps you not only with your last-minute shopping, but also your planning into the spring. We’re incredibly blessed to be hosting our 35th season at Horizon Stage and we wish you and your family a wonderful, healthy, happy year ahead. See you soon.

Kick of the Christmas Season with Some Smokin’ Hot Blues Music

Catch Big Hank’s Tribute to the Blues Songs of Christmas Featuring Uncle Wiggly’s Hot Shoes Blues Band December 2

Big Hank Lionheart is known for his powerful voice and, whether he’s performing with gut-wrenching drive or gently caressing a moment of musical tenderness, you’ll feel the magic right down to your toes.  Last seen at Horizon Stage in 2014 with his show Fist Full of Blues Christmas, Big Hank is back with his Tribute to the Blues Songs of Christmas Featuring Uncle Wiggly's Hot Shoes Blues Band on Saturday, December 2 at 7:30 p.m.

This new show is a collection of traditional Blues Christmas tunes from the 20s to the 60s, by the likes of Louis Jordan, Big Joe Turner, BB King, Eric Clapton, Charles Brown, Etta James, and more. It’s not the standard collection of carols, rather it’s a tribute that gives you a look into the souls of fabulous music legends sharing their Christmas Blues. A refreshing take on a holiday concert, it has played to sold-out houses and received rave reviews across British Columbia.

Uncle Wiggly’s Hot Shoes Blues band are former RCA recording artists and members of the Victoria Music Hall of Fame who toured extensively in the 80s, sharing stages with legends like Muddy Waters, Joe Cocker, James Cotton, Koko Taylor, and Paul Butterfield. They continue to keep the blues alive in Victoria and beyond, packing dance floors wherever they play. They released a new CD in 2013 called “Still Burnin it Up”, have successfully toured Alberta and BC, and played hot sets at the Island Folkfest and the Vancouver Island Blues Bash. To top it all off they won the right to represent BC at the International Blues Challenge in White Rock in July 2014 and traveled to Memphis in January of 2015 to compete.

For their Spruce Grove show the band will be made up of Big Hank Lionhart, a.k.a. Uncle Wiggly, on vocals, Mark Comerford on guitar, Andy Graffiti on drums, and Lonnie Glass on bass along with three special guests, Edmonton-based musicians Dennis Meneely on keys, Don Berner on sax, and Doug Berner on trumpet.

Take a turn off the ‘traditional’ path and enjoy a glimpse into the heart and soul of Christmas from a Blues point of view with Big Hank's Tribute to the Blues Songs of Christmas Featuring Uncle Wiggly’s Hot Shoes Blues Band at Horizon Stage on Saturday, December 2. Tickets are $35 for Adults and $30 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through Ticketpro.ca. Horizon Stage is collecting for the Parkland Food Bank in December so please consider bringing a donation when you see this show and help spread the Christmas spirit!

Local Canadian Veteran Shares Personal Stories Through Song

Horizon Stage Presents Tim Isberg: Singer, Songwriter, Soldier, on Friday, November 17

From Rwanda to Afghanistan, Canadian Army veteran Tim Isberg has faced the challenges of living and working in different cultures and conflicts amid the best and worst humanity has to offer. As a singer-songwriter, Tim weaves sincerity and a natural sense of humour through the fabric of his well-crafted stories and songs. With a voice and style similar to Lennie Gallant, Ryan Adams, and Rodney Crowell, Tim makes each and every listener feel connected. Less than a week after Remembrance Day, Tim will share his incredible life experiences through his contemporary folk and country music at Horizon Stage on Friday, November 17.

Originally from southern Alberta, Tim’s path has been long and twisty. He started playing, performing, and writing at a young age but pursued an education in environmental sciences. Tim was encouraged to join the Reserves in Lethbridge, which he really enjoyed, so he later joined the Canadian Army and went off to see the world.

About 10 years ago Tim picked up the guitar again. Since then he has re-launched his career as a folk/country singer-songwriter and he has toured internationally. His album Tears Along The Road was recorded with celebrated JUNO award-winning producer-engineer Miles Wilkinson, and was selected by Music Canada as one of their Top 25 favourite Albums of 2015. His song "Devil on Your Back", about revenge on the western Blackfoot Plains, was a finalist in the Best Song of Alberta for the Calgary Folk Music Festival. In 2016 Tim was honoured to be nominated for a Male Artist of the Year Alberta Country Music Award.

Tim is very well rounded! With a formal education in global studies and political and environmental sciences Tim also trains horses and writes more than just music. One of his stories is featured in the book "Everyday Heroes" which was published by Simon and Schuster in October 2017.

See life through the music of a Canadian veteran - get to know Tim Isberg at Horizon Stage on Friday, November 17. Tickets are $35 for Adults and $30 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through Ticketpro.ca.

"Tim Isberg's humour, heart-felt stories and authentic music captured our audience from the first song... many say it was the best show they'd seen at the club..."
Joe Duperreault, New Moon Folk Club (Edmonton)

"An evening with Tim is like sitting by a fire with friends listening to great stories with an exceptional guitar player and an even better story teller".
Patrick MacIntyre, Ironwood Stage & Grill (Calgary)
