Eclectic Concert will Surprise and Delight You

Quartetto Gelato will Perform Tango, Gypsy, Folk, Classical, and More on January 14

Virtuosic classical showpieces, romantic tenor arias, blazing gypsy tunes, sizzling tangos, and favourite folk melodies - just some of the music you’ll enjoy at a Quartetto Gelato concert. For 25 years, this dazzling ensemble has enchanted audiences and critics worldwide with their exotic blend of musical talent, artistic passion, and humor. Classical in training – eclectic by design – Quartetto Gelato not only thrills its audiences with its skill on multiple instruments, but also offers the bonus of a brilliant operatic tenor. With a performance repertoire that spans the globe including classical masterworks, operatic arias, the sizzling energy of tangos, gypsy and folk songs, the group’s theatrical stage presence and relaxed humor establishes an intimate rapport with audiences worldwide. Experience Quartetto Gelato Up Close and Personal at Horizon Stage on Sunday, January 14, 2018.

Quartetto Gelato’s international career was launched when they won the coveted title of NPR Performance Today’s “Debut Artist of the Year.” Their first DVD, Quartetto Gelato: A Concert in Wine Country, was picked up by PBS throughout the U.S. in 2007 and is still broadcast regularly. The quartet can be heard on the soundtrack of the Hollywood film Only You, as well as on Ashley MacIsaac’s hit CD Hi How are You Today?. In 2010 Quartetto Gelato were honoured as Best Classical Ensemble at Canada’s INDIE awards and they achieved unique global reach when Canadian astronaut Dr. Robert Thirsk chose their first two CDs to take on his NASA flight on the space shuttle Columbia where they were (literally) heard around the world.

Peter DeSotto’s (tenor, violin, mandolin) chameleon-like abilities allow him to perform not only as a seasoned classical violinist but also as a dazzling gypsy virtuoso. His fabulous tenor voice ranges from South America, to authentic Irish folk, to great romantic Italian songs and arias. Referred to as “a credible Pavarotti stand-in”, he has appeared in leading roles in numerous opera and theatre productions. Peter was a member of The Toronto Symphony Orchestra for 11 years.

Alexander Sevastian (accordion, piano, bandoneon) joined Quartetto Gelato in 2002. Born in Minsk, Belarus, Alex began his studies on the accordion at the age of seven. He has a Masters in Performance degree from the Gnessin Academy of Music in Moscow and has won four International Accordion Competitions.

Colin Maier (oboe) has a Bachelor’s degree in oboe performance from the University of Calgary. He joined Quartetto Gelato in 2009. In addition to being a musician, Colin has also worked as a dancer, actor, stuntman, singer, choreographer, acrobat and martial-artist. In addition to oboe, he also plays clarinet, English horn, bassoon, violin, 5-string banjo, acoustic/electric bass, piano, saxophone, flute, guitar, mandolin and musical saw.

Liza McLellan (cello) works with numerous orchestras and chamber ensembles throughout Ontario, has performed as a soloist and chamber musician across North America, and has toured to China and Korea. Liza has been recorded both by CBC radio and T.V. and has performed live for the television show Canada A.M. and 96.3 FM radio.

“Equal parts of musicianship, showmanship and what might be called “laughmanship” marked the lively quartet’s witty, wide-ranging program.”
Des Moines Register

“Quartetto Gelato does it again, proving that they are indeed the “Cirque du Soleil” of classical music – always fresh, full of surprises, constantly re-inventing.”
Michael Lyons, Classical 96.3FM

“Quartetto Gelato’s performances have a warm, endearing vitality….”

Holiday Ticket Sale

The staff at Horizon Stage have decided to jump start the holiday revelry, we're holding a Holiday Ticket Sale. We’ve always said that tickets make great gifts or stocking stuffers, so we’re looking to help you by offering some great discounts on select shows in the new year.
The first sale item is the performance of James Gordon and Sons, Friday, February 2. This one is an extra-special 2 for 1 price. James and his sons have been making Canadian folk music together for years, and I know there are some folkies in our audience – so here’s your chance to bring a friend and reminisce. Bring on the fringed leather vests and long hair, you are welcome here, my friends!
The rest of the offers are 20% off tickets:
Silver Screen Scoundrels, Thursday, February 8 at 2 p.m. I specifically mention the time because it is a Thursday afternoon and it’s important to know that before you buy the tickets. It’s the fourth year we’ve presented a show in this time slot, and it has proven to be very popular with our older audiences. Seniors’ groups, tours from Westlock, and lots of retired patrons love to come in the afternoon, when they have access to specialized transit or other options. This year, the Silver Screen Scoundrels are going to entertain you with wonderful silent films to go along with their live music. I first saw this act a couple of years ago, and I thought it was brilliant. Here you have two incredibly talented musicians, playing their instruments as a soundtrack to silent films they have written, starred in, and are showing behind them. It’s really a unique experience – blending visual with what we hear, and doing it all with a sense of humour.

Proteus Saxophone Quartet, Saturday, February 17. I’ll admit, a saxophone quartet is a pretty specific genre, and it’s going to have a specific audience. We encourage anyone who is studying an instrument to consider this show – especially those in a junior high or high school band. It’s important for them to hear music presented in a new way, to expand their own knowledge, and to experience professional musicians in their own community. Student or not, the quartet will have you marveling at the diversity of music the saxophones can produce.

Lion Bear Fox, Saturday, March 3. I know, I’m not really supposed to “pick favourites” in the season. But if I’m being really honest with you, this trio is among my top picks this year. I saw them in Vancouver at a conference, in a theatre even cozier than ours. From the minute they picked up their instruments I knew there was something special going on. These three men, all with solo careers of their own, decided to join forces and create music together. Because of their own individual strengths, the trio has a powerful dynamic and stage presence. The stories they tell through music are strong and easy to connect with, and they range from fun and lighthearted (“Freedom” is actually about a lady down the street who gave them popsicles in the summer as kids) to the stunning (the acoustic version of “Home” they did gives me goosebumps every time I think about it). The band is named for each member’s “spirit animal”. You have to see them to understand it. Who is the Bear? Who is the Fox? And the remaining one must be the Lion. This show is my birthday present to me. I hope you’ll come share it with me.

DuffleBag Theatre: Robin Hood, Sunday, March 4 at 2 p.m. The final Family Matinee in this season, DuffleBag is an audience favourite. Simple concepts, some creative costumes and props, and a genuine love of sharing theatre with children – that’s their slam-dunk recipe. No flashy special effects, no big soundtrack, just storytelling at its most… creative. Each of the fairy tales they perform are well known to their audiences, but with DuffleBag that’s just the beginning. Audience participation is key to the show, because at some point the show needs a hero, a villain, and a lot of supporting characters. Last time they were here one lucky young lady got to be Snow White – the lead role, plucked right out of the seats! I love watching the kids at DuffleBag shows, but just as often I’m watching the parents. Pure delight and enjoyment. What more can I say?

Brickhouse, Friday, April 27. This will be the final show in our 35th year. What a great way to end the season – funk and R&B music that will make you happy to be alive. I will share something about me – I simply have a really hard time sitting still when there’s good music playing, and every time I listen to Brickhouse I find myself dancing in my chair. If these guys were a local Edmonton band, I would go out dancing a whole lot more, believe me! They’re a tight band, full of energy and enthusiasm, and I dare say it’s going to close the season with a bang. Take a chance – you’re unlikely to regret it.

So, because this is a Holiday Ticket Sale, these deals are available for a limited time only. Between now and December 31, to be precise. It’s easy to get in on the special prices: phone us at the City Hall Ticket Centre Monday – Friday 9-4:30 at 780-962-8995 or come see us in person. After hours, or while our office is closed over the holidays (December 22 at noon through January 1 inclusive) you can call Ticketpro at 1-888-655-9090. Or, if your fingers are itching to make the transaction themselves, online purchases are available all day and night, in your jammies while sipping a lovely beverage. All the ticket links are at horizonstage.com. One last thing – you will need a Promo code to get your amazing prices. Either online, or talking to a person, you’ll have to know this super-secret password. Ready? The password is: GIFT

We hope this helps you not only with your last-minute shopping, but also your planning into the spring. We’re incredibly blessed to be hosting our 35th season at Horizon Stage and we wish you and your family a wonderful, healthy, happy year ahead. See you soon.

This new show is a collection of traditional Blues Christmas tunes from the 20s to the 60s, by the likes of Louis Jordan, Big Joe Turner, BB King, Eric Clapton, Charles Brown, Etta James, and more. A refreshing take on a holiday concert, it has played to sold-out houses and received rave reviews across British Columbia.

Uncle Wiggly’s Hot Shoes Blues band are former RCA recording artists and members of the Victoria Music Hall of Fame who toured extensively in the 80s, sharing stages with legends like Muddy Waters, Joe Cocker, James Cotton, Koko Taylor, and Paul Butterfield. They continue to keep the blues alive in Victoria and beyond, packing dance floors wherever they play. They released a new CD in 2013 called “Still Burnin it Up”, have successfully toured Alberta and BC, and played hot sets at the Island Folkfest and the Vancouver Island Blues Bash. To top it all off they won the right to represent BC at the International Blues Challenge in White Rock in July 2014 and traveled to Memphis in January of 2015 to compete.

For their Spruce Grove show the band will be made up of Big Hank Lionhart, a.k.a. Uncle Wiggly, on vocals, Mark Comerford on guitar, Andy Graffiti on drums, and Lonnie Glass on bass along with three special guests, Edmonton-based musicians Dennis Meneely on keys, Don Berner on sax, and Doug Berner on trumpet.

Take a turn off the ‘traditional’ path and enjoy a glimpse into the heart and soul of Christmas from a Blues point of view with Big Hank's Tribute to the Blues Songs of Christmas Featuring Uncle Wiggly’s Hot Shoes Blues Band at Horizon Stage on Saturday, December 2. Tickets are $35 for Adults and $30 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through Ticketpro.ca. Local Canadian Veteran Shares Personal Stories Through Song

Horizon Stage Presents Tim Isberg: Singer, Songwriter, Soldier, on Friday, November 17

From Rwanda to Afghanistan, Canadian Army veteran Tim Isberg has faced the challenges of living and working in different cultures and conflicts amid the best and worst humanity has to offer. As a singer-songwriter, Tim weaves sincerity and a natural sense of humour through the fabric of his well-crafted stories and songs. With a voice and style similar to Lennie Gallant, Ryan Adams, and Rodney Crowell, Tim makes each and every listener feel connected. Less than a week after Remembrance Day, Tim will share his incredible life experiences through his contemporary folk and country music at Horizon Stage on Friday, November 17.

Originally from southern Alberta, Tim’s path has been long and twisty. He started playing, performing, and writing at a young age but pursued an education in environmental sciences. Tim was encouraged to join the Reserves in Lethbridge, which he really enjoyed, so he later joined the Canadian Army and went off to see the world.

About 10 years ago Tim picked up the guitar again. Since then he has re-launched his career as a folk/country singer-songwriter and he has toured internationally. His album Tears Along The Road was recorded with celebrated JUNO award-winning producer-engineer Miles Wilkinson, and was selected by Music Canada as one of their Top 25 favourite Albums of 2015. His song "Devil on Your Back", about revenge on the western Blackfoot Plains, was a finalist in the Best Song of Alberta for the Calgary Folk Music Festival. In 2016 Tim was honoured to be nominated for a Male Artist of the Year Alberta Country Music Award.

Tim is very well rounded! With a formal education in global studies and political and environmental sciences Tim also trains horses and writes more than just music. One of his stories is featured in the book "Everyday Heroes" which was published by Simon and Schuster in October 2017.

See life through the music of a Canadian veteran - get to know Tim Isberg at Horizon Stage on Friday, November 17. Tickets are $35 for Adults and $30 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through Ticketpro.ca.

Joe Duperreault, New Moon Folk Club (Edmonton)

"An evening with Tim is like sitting by a fire with friends listening to great stories with an exceptional guitar player and an even better story teller".

Charlie A’Court Brings His Powerful and Soulful Blues to Spruce Grove

Expect dynamic vocals and incredible guitar riffs at Horizon Stage on November 3

Canadian singer-songwriter-guitarist Charlie A’Court is a proverbial force to be reckoned with. Planted at the crossroads between roots and soul, Charlie’s mighty voice, fierce guitar work, and contemporary songwriting skills have earned him an international following and a host of awards and accolades for his five solo albums. Fueled by emotion and a desire for delivering powerful music, Charlie’s gutsy vocals and colourful guitar playing have been satisfying long-time fans and attracting new fans for 15 years. Charlie has toured Alberta before and he’s happy to be back and making a stop at Horizon Stage on Friday, November 3, at 7:30 p.m.

Born with the gift of voice, Charlie A’Court grew up in rural Nova Scotia where he spent his youth learning to play guitar. He immersed himself in his father’s vinyl record collection and discovered singers like Otis Redding and Sam Cooke. Over the years his influences grew to include contemporary artists such as Jonny Lang, Colin James, John Mayer and Joe Bonamassa.

Charlie started performing with his father on local stages before he was of legal age, regularly wowing the audience with his soulful vocals and well-honed guitar skills. Fueled by that experience, and the fire that comes from finding and following one’s passion, he began touring and recording on his own; releasing his debut CD, Colour Me Gone in 2003. That year Charlie swept the Music Nova Scotia Awards, winning Male Artist of the Year, Blues Recording of the Year, Album of the Year and Entertainer of the Year; he also received his first East Coast Music Award nomination for New Artist of the Year. He has since released four more albums, secured another fistful of Music Nova Scotia awards, and lined his mantle with five East Coast Music Awards in categories from Blues Recording to Pop Recording to R&B/Soul Recording, along the way. A’Court has also received national recognition, receiving 2014 Maple Blues Award nominations for both Male Vocalist and Songwriter of the Year.

Arguably most revered for his dynamic, engaging live performance, Charlie A’Court tours non-stop throughout Canada and his adopted second home of Australia, with forays to the USA, UK, and Europe. He has headlined performances at multiple festivals, including the Stan Rogers Folk Festival and the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival, and has shared the stage with James Cotton, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, George Thorogood, Harry Manx, Martin Sexton, Delbert McClinton, Colin James, Dan Aykroyd and Jimmie Vaughan, among many others.

Get set for a night filled with smooth and soulful blues and roots music by Charlie A’Court on November 3. Tickets are $35 for Adults and $30 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through Ticketpro.ca.

A'Court slides into his role as smooth soul man with ease… Singing high and mighty, rising into falsetto, getting into the groove, or slaying us with tenderness, he's a singing tour-de-force.”

His off-Broadway debut in August 2005 was a smashing success with critics raving about the incredible intensity that he brings to his work. To mark the release of Star Wars: Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith, Charles was honored to perform at Lucasfilm's official movie release convention, Celebration 3. Even the likes of Vin Diesel and Sir Ian McKellan have taken in his performances and have given him rave reviews.

Edmonton Band Puts a Modern Twist on the Classic Country Sound

Horizon Stage Presents the Dungarees, with Opening Act Steve Newsome, on October 14

Five-piece country/roots-rockers The Dungarees take the undeniable lyrical styling, twangy telecaster, and steel guitar they love from classic country and inject it with harmony, modern intensity, and pop sensibility.

The Dungarees are an Edmonton super group.  All five members have had successful music careers in other well-known local bands before they joined forces and became The Dungarees. Bassist/vocalist James Murdoch was the lead singer for The James Murdoch Band, guitarist/vocalist Robb Angus was in The Wheat Pool from 2005 - 2012, guitarist/vocalist Kiron Jhass was a member of The Uncas, steel player Darrek Anderson performed with Old Reliable, and drummer Ben Shillabeer worked with Social Code and the Boom Chucka Boys. Together they are one of Canada’s fastest rising Country music groups and on Saturday, October 14 they will take a step just 20-minutes west of the city to perform at Horizon Stage in Spruce Grove.

No strangers to award nominations and wins - the Dungarees’ 2015 single "Ain't Through Being Happy Yet" won an Edmonton Music Award and the band was nominated for Group of The Year at the 2016 Alberta Country Music Awards. The Dungarees won $100,953 in prize money from Alberta Music’s 2016 Project Wild artist development program and were honored to be shortlisted for multiple 2017 Canadian Country Music Awards - including a Bass Player of the Year nomination for James Murdoch.

Produced by legendary multi-Grammy Award winning producer Paul Worley, the Dungarees’ most-recent upbeat summer single “Anywhere With You” was a follow-up to “I’m Down” which was played in heavy rotation from coast to coast on commercial country radio. The Dungarees have performed at marquee festivals including Boots and Hearts Music Festival, the Calgary Stampede, Big Valley Jamboree, Country Thunder, Dauphin CountryFest and SunFest. They have proudly
opened for Blake Shelton, Reba McEntire, Miranda Lambert, and Dwight Yoakam. In October 2016 they helped raise more than $10,000 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation by performing for 24 hours at the Yellowhead Brewery.

Opening for the Dungarees at Horizon Stage will be local country singer/songwriter Steve Newsome. Born and raised in southern Alberta Steve now hangs his hat west of Stony Plain. Steve’s proud farm, ranch, and rural past, have given him plenty of inspiration for his songwriting - from pack horses and back country rodeos to making big rig wheels and equipment tracks turn. He has played a number of songwriter showcases throughout Alberta and has shared the stage with Jason McCoy, Jake Mathews, and Adam Gregory.

Put on your cowboy hat and boots and rock the night away with The Dungarees and Steve Newsome on October 14! Doors open at 7:15 p.m. and Steve will take the stage at 7:30. Tickets are just $35 for Adults and $30 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online at ticketpro.ca.

A Toast to Lawrie Seligman.

Lawrie Seligman was with the City of Spruce Grove from 2000-2014, first as Theatre Manager for Horizon Stage, then as Director of Cultural Services. He passed away on August 28, 2017. This is the toast that was given at the gathering we held on September 20 to celebrate Lawrie's life.

"Thanks for coming to celebrate with us, and filling this space with friendship.

Marion, Lawrie's wife, asked me to extend her regrets; she just can't be here yet. It's too hard. She wanted me to express her gratitude for everyone who has helped put this gathering together, and for everyone's kindness and support. She appreciates knowing how loved Lawrie is.

Lawrie had a passion for whatever was in front of him. Radio, television, theatre, music. LIFE. He wanted us to make the most of what we had, always. Don’t rest on your laurels, don’t be satisfied with “good enough”. But when it’s done, look back and be proud.
Lawrie meant something different to each of us. He had a way of making each person feel important, and that's an admirable quality. Lawrie will be missed, loved, and remembered for his contribution not only to our work, but to our lives. We are better people for having known him.

I'm not going to give a eulogy, that's not why we're here. Instead, I'm going to ask you to remember what made Lawrie special in your life, and consider how you can share that with someone else.

I'm going to ask you to raise your glass, take a deep breath, and send all the love in this room to our beautiful friend.

To Lawrie"

End of the Rainbow Sheds Light on Judy Garland's Troubled Twilight Years

Horizon Stage Presents ACEproductions: End of the Rainbow on Wednesday, October 11

There are moments in the theatre when you lean forward in your seat with shivers down your spine and realize there is nowhere on earth you’d rather be! End of The Rainbow is a true account of Judy Garland’s twilight years; an all-too-mortal goddess on the eve of her destruction revealed in a way seldom found in the tabloids. See that perilous bipolar energy that so often animates great performers. Touch this woman at your own risk - she burns. Every chapter of Judy’s history is alive; she is foul-mouthed, flirtatious, erotic, childlike, unedited, manipulative, and supremely self-conscious as she makes both love and war with her keepers. She has a strong sense of herself as a human tragedy on a world stage, but her sense of humour, and the absurdity of it all, is just as sharp and appallingly funny, and then…she sings! And all those disparate elements coalesce into a coherent riveting whole.

Written by Peter Quilter and directed by Claude Giroux, ACEproductions: End of the Rainbow is the Canadian premier production of a show that was a huge hit on Broadway and in London’s West  End. This Canadian cast is led by award-winning Vancouver singer and actress Janet Gigliotti as Judy Garland, along with Jeffery Hoffman, Gordon Roberts, Matthew Simmons and Robin Clegg. After successful runs at Jericho Arts Centre and the Deep Cove Shaw Theatre in Vancouver the company is excited to bring their show to Alberta where they will make a stop at Horizon Stage in Spruce Grove on Wednesday, October 11, at 7:30 p.m.

ACEproductions was formed in 2003 by Damon Calderwood and Gordon Roberts to present the best small cast plays and musicals with the intention of creating an ongoing touring company using the finest professional talent available. They are a not-for-profit society with a mandate to reach communities and audiences that do not receive regular touring live theatre.

Electrifying, intense, and real, ACEproductions: End of the Rainbow will leave you breathless. It is must-see theatre for Judy Garland fans but due to the adult nature of its content it is not recommended for anyone under the age of 14. Tickets are $35 for Adults and $30 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online at ticketpro.ca.

"It is Gigliotti leading the entire production with a voluminous voice and verve."
- Sharon DeMarko Gordon, Downtowner

Gigliotti is petite, but has big pipes and she delivers more than twenty classics including The Trolley Song, For Me and My Gal, Come Rain or Come Shine, Just In Time, You Made Me Love You and, of course, Over The Rainbow.”
- Jo Ledingham, Theatre Reviews

“What a great voice this Gigliotti has! Gigliotti’s voice is sultry and beautiful. Judy Garland would be proud to know that this lady would play the role of Judy one day.”

Horizon Stage Hosts an Old Fashioned Hall Party with Union Duke

Patron Appreciation Event at Elks Hall Promises to be a Night of Great Music, Dancing, and Fun

We’re taking Horizon Stage “On the Road” for an old fashioned hall party where we’ll also be celebrating and appreciating YOU, our patrons, at the beautiful and recently renovated Elks Hall. The evening will include door prizes, complimentary appetizers, a sneak peek at some of Horizon Stage’s 2017/18 season, and performances by two fantastic artists - opening act VISSIA and headliner Union Duke. It all gets started at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 28.

Like a musical locomotive hurtling ‘round the bend, Union Duke is a folk quintet from Toronto that’s taking the music world by storm - one captivating performance at a time. Touring across Canada they have left a vast trail of amazement in their wake, topping the must-see lists at countless festivals. With banjos rambling, guitars wailing, and superb melodies, an infectious magnetism emanates from every stage they’ve had the privilege to grace. Their enthusiasm is infectious, they leave all of their audiences smiling, and they’re looking forward to energizing everyone at Elks Hall!

Matt Warry-Smith (percussion/vocals), Ethan Smith (guitar/vocals), Will Staunton (bass/vocals), Rob McLaren (guitar/vocals) and Jim McDonald (strings/vocals) have been making a commotion in one way or another since they were kids. Years of making music together have brought them to this: a heartbreak of twang and a boot shake of rock and roll. Union Duke is two fifths city, two fifths country, and one fifth whiskey.

For their third record, Golden Days, Union Duke recorded live off the floor to capture the raw, joyful energy of their concerts. Then they brought in Grammy award-winning mix engineer Mark Lawson to bring the mixes to life. Golden Days will take you back to your warmest memories: nights by the lake, passing a bottle around the fire, or singing with your friends at the top of your lungs.

Warming up the crowd at Elks Hall will be local musician VISSIA. As a former member of the Stony Plain based trio The Vissia Sisters, VISSIA’s music studies began at an early age with piano, voice, and guitar, which culminated in a growing interest toward songwriting. Now living in Edmonton she has been building an audience around Canadian coffee shops, music clubs, and festival stages since her solo debut in 2011. She has had the pleasure of sharing stages with artists Gretchen Peters, Del Barber, Lindi Ortega, Russel de Carle, and Matt Anderson.

VISSIA’s skillful, honest songwriting and powerful voice will grab your ears and punch you in the heart. In 2016 she became the voice and face of ATB Financial’s “ATB Listens” campaign and kicked off 2017 with a five-week residency at the renowned Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. She will be releasing her next full-length album in September 2017.

Don’t miss out! Join us for a night of dancing and merriment at Elks Hall on Friday, April 28. Doors open at 8 p.m., VISSIA performs at 8:15 p.m. and then Union Duke hits the stage at 9 p.m. Tickets are $25 for all ages and seating will be general admission at tables. Tickets can be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through Ticketpro.ca - only a limited number of tickets are still available. Hot and Spicy New Orleans Style Rockin’ Roots and Bayou Blues

Gary Comeau and the Voodoo Allstars Bring an Original Blend of Cajun and Zydeco-Influenced Music to Horizon Stage

“Take the rhythm of the Maritime Acadian music, season it with Louisiana zydeco blues and, add a twist of Highway 61-era Dylan, serve it up with great showmanship, and you’ve got a potent musical cocktail that will have your head spinning and your feet dancing." This is an apt description of a Gary Comeau and the Voodoo Allstars concert. These hot and spicy swamp kings from Canada’s west coast have been electrifying audiences across British Columbia with their original brand of swamp, roots, and bayou blues and they’re looking forward to energizing everyone at Horizon Stage on Friday, April 7.

Lead singer Gary Comeau is a songwriter and musician with unusual diversity and talent. Playing a range of instruments, including guitar, mandolin, fiddle, accordion, and piano, he delivers originally crafted, high-energy, New Orleans-style rockin’ roots and blues. Although Gary’s own roots are French-Acadian, he was born and raised in Nova Scotia, his soul seems to have taken a long and inspiring detour through Louisiana and the Mississippi Delta enroute to his current home in Vancouver. And while Gary may not necessarily consider himself to be a Cajun or zydeco artist per se, those styles have certainly influenced the music he has written and recorded over the years.

Between 1997 and 2004 Gary released four CDs. More recently he and the Voodoo Allstars released One Night Only - a recording of their February 2016 concert at the Dream Café in Penticton, BC.  Gary’s talents have also caught the attention of the film industry with songs like "Marianne" being featured in the Paramount film Double Jeopardy (1999) and "I Think About You All the Time” being part of the The Wild Guys (2004) soundtrack.

Gary Comeau is an authentic minstrel and a genuine character with a top hat and a penchant for colourful clothing. His Voodoo Allstars are a close-knit, highly experienced group of first-class musicians. Drummer Chris Nordquist, bassist Rob Becker, guitarist/slide guitarist Tim Hersey, and saxist/percussionist Jerry Cook are well-known for their chops in Vancouver’s music community. They have all worked consistently with Comeau for years and know how to follow the merest blink of his eye. When not working as the five-piece Voodoo Allstars, Gary, Tim, and Chris also perform as the hybrid blues and roots band Cannery Row, who had crowds up and dancing at Spruce Grove’s 2015 Canada Day Celebration.

Join us for a night of invigorating music and entertainment by Gary Comeau and the Voodoo Allstars at Horizon Stage on Friday, April 7 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 for Adults and $30 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through Ticketpro.ca.

Harp and Violin Blend Together Beautifully and Battle Artistically

Duo Milot & Bareil’s Unique Concert Pairs Their Instruments Together Then Pits Them Against Each Other

A couple on stage and in life, harpist Valérie Milot and violinist Antoine Bareil’s performances are marked by exceptional artistry and intimate connection. With custom arrangements and transcription by Antoine, their unique concerts highlight the similarities and the differences between two musicians and their instruments. While some works pair harp and violin as a beautifully intertwined duo, others pit them in an artistic battle of virtuosity. Valérie and Antoine also take time to explain their instruments, tell stories about the music, and share anecdotes about their own experiences. Experience the smooth, sweet, and sizzling sounds and stories of Duo Milot & Bareil at Horizon Stage on Saturday, April 1 at 7:30 p.m.

Valérie and Antoine were each awarded the prestigious Prix Avec Grande Distinction after completing their studies at the Conservatoire de Musique de Trois-Rivières. Valérie won the Prix d’Europe scholarship and went on to perfect her art in New York, while Antoine pursued his studies at the Mozarteum University of Salzburg in Austria.

Duo Milot & Bareil have collaborated on several critically acclaimed recordings including Old Friends – A Classical Tribute to Simon & Garfunkel (2011) and Around Christmas (2012). They have participated in numerous radio broadcasts together and regularly collaborate with a variety of other artists. Horizon Stage audiences will remember Antoine from his 2009 show, Soaring Strings, with cellist Sébastien Lépine, which was an introduction to 20th century classical music for younger audiences that came complete with a light show!

In addition to her busy schedule with Duo Milot & Bareil, Valerie has an active career as a soloist and chamber musician. She is regularly invited to perform with orchestras internationally, particularly in Switzerland, Brazil, and France. Introduced to music when she was very young, Valérie studied the piano for several years before choosing the harp at age ten. She has been teaching at her alma matter - Trois-Riviéres Conservatories of Music - since 2015 and has recorded 7 albums in total. In her latest solo work, Orbis, she pushes the boundaries of her style by marrying music and digital art.

Antoine has performed in more than a dozen countries. He has been a member of Quartango since 2009 and the concertmaster of the Laval Symphony Orchestra since 2013, and he plays regularly with Les Violons du Roy, a French-Canadian chamber orchestra based in Québec City. Antoine has also written music for some National Film Board of Canada short films. A versatile musician, he can be heard on fifty albums of varied styles. He has won several awards, including a Juno for Best Instrumental Album for Encuentro by Quartango. Antoine plays on a violin made by Vuillaume with a bow made by Voirin, courtesy of Canimex.

Allow Duo Milot & Bareil to enchant, enlighten, engage, and entertain you with their beautiful music and fascinating narratives at Horizon Stage on Saturday, April 1. Tickets are $35 for Adults and $30 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through Ticketpro.ca.

Milot’s touch on the strings is effortless. She conjures both harp and notes away. They vanish on her fingertips. What pours out is pure musical perception.” - The Chronicle Herald

“[A] beautiful couple… masters both in their discipline, they were on stage relaxed, visibly determined to distill pleasure and share it with us. No one of the two protagonists, violinist or harpist, was the star in this concert. On the contrary, it was in turn that they were the prime contractor, supported and accompanied by the other.

Wayne has appeared on numerous national television and radio programs and was recognized as Entertainer of the Year for 2008 at the 2008 Canadian Events Industry Awards.

What does it mean to “Live the Laughter”? With Wayne Lee it means a highly interactive show that is as unique as it is hilarious. It means gut-splitting laughter and improbable scenes acted out by audience members no longer inhibited by their fears. Wayne invites members of the audience to explore their creativity, engage their passion, and experience increased group synergy – all while having fun! Wayne helps people out of their comfort zone and inspires them to truly become the performer they are meant to be. But there is no pressure - audience members can choose to sit back, watch, and be entertained OR they may decide to join Wayne on stage and become part the production.

Wayne Lee captivates and charms his audiences, then envelops them in magic of the moment with outrageously funny results. He has acquired life-long fans, including individuals who became the stars of the shows they came to see. Soulful Jazz with a Vintage Feel and a Modern Twist

Rich, Sultry, and Sweet - Alberta’s Own Ellen Doty performs at Horizon Stage - Friday, February 24

Ellen Doty is a soulful Canadian vocalist and songwriter with a world-class voice. Her nostalgic sound is rooted in jazz, but seamlessly incorporates elements of other genres including folk and pop and adds a modern twist as well. A true storyteller whose works are intimate and personal, Ellen’s immense talent for lyrics is complemented by her stunning vocals. Rich, sultry, and sweet, Ellen’s voice draws listeners in and takes them on an unforgettable journey. Horizon Stage is pleased to present Ellen Doty on Friday, February 24, at 7:30 p.m.

Originally from Okotoks, Alberta, Ellen has been performing since age five. She studied jazz at Carleton University before taking a detour to the University of Calgary where, thinking that she should “probably have a real job”, she decided to take geology. But geology didn’t pan out and Ellen left school in her third year to return to a career in music - and she’s thankful she did as she now can’t imagine doing anything else.

Since returning to music Ellen has had the opportunity to work with many of her jazz heroes including Al Kay, Pat Labarbera, Bobby Shew, Dave Mancini and PJ Perry. In 2013, she received the ‘Outstanding Soloist’ award from the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Idaho and she completed an artist residency for Collaborative Song-Writing at the prestigious Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. After releasing two singles, “Live at the Station” (2012) and “That's Love” (2013), she received an album production grant in May 2013 from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.

Ellen’s first full-length album, Gold, broke the top ten on several Canadian jazz charts and received critical acclaim. The media called it “an immediate, handmade, warm-hearted statement” and “sweet ’n’ sunny crossover jazz-pop” and said that her “voice honey-coats every word it sings.” The record featured ten of Ellen's original compositions, and a piece by Toronto songwriter Kyle Zavitz. Co-writers also included Oliver Miguel, Josh Crowhurst, Conrad Good, and Danny Michel.

After considerable support from fans and an overwhelming response to a crowd-funding campaign, Ellen embarked on a thirty city, forty-six stop cross-Canada tour from Sydney, Nova Scotia to Victoria, BC. She thoroughly enchanted audiences across the country with her show stopping performances. After opening for Grammy-winner Gregory Porter at the Jack Singer Concert Hall in Calgary in 2016, she has been touring with award-winning saxophonist Eli Bennett and her long-time collaborator Josh Crowhurst.

Ellen released an emotional single titled "Just So You Know" in April 2015 after the loss of a dear friend. She is currently working on her sophomore album which is set for release in 2017. She has had the opportunity to collaborate and song-write with a number of noteworthy artists for the project including Juno-winner Justin Rutledge, Danny Vacon, Andy Stochansky, and Davide Direnzo.

With an honesty and warmth that sets her apart, Ellen Doty is clearly an emerging Canadian talent. Catch her at Horizon Stage on Friday, February 24 so that you can someday say “I saw her when…” Tickets are $35 for Adults and $30 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through ticketpro.ca.

A Story About Family, Figuring Out Where You Come From, And Finding Your Way

Award-Winning Author Ivan Coyote presents Kraft Singles for Everyone at Horizon Stage on February 22

Ivan Coyote’s Kraft Singles for Everyone is a heart-felt and heartbreaking performance about figuring out where you come from and finding your way. It touches on subjects such as being an ex-Catholic queer and the dynamics of small town big families, and leaves us asking ourselves what we truly inherit from the blood that runs in our veins. Horizon Stage is excited to present Kraft Singles for Everyone on Wednesday, February 22, at 7:30 p.m.
Born and raised in a large Irish Catholic family in Whitehorse, Ivan Coyote learned the craft of storytelling while gathering around their grandmother’s kitchen table on long northern winter nights. Ivan’s work tackles the difficult subjects of family, class, gender identity, and social justice with the silver tongue of a master storyteller, an eye for the beauty found in what makes us all human, and an ear for the hilarity of life and love. Ivan’s first love is telling stories to a live audience, and they have become an audience favourite at writers’, storytelling, poetry, spoken word, and music festivals from Anchorage to Amsterdam.

Ivan began performing spoken word in 1992. They are the award-winning author of nine collections of short stories, one novel, a collection of essays, three screenplays and three CDs including the 2007 ReLit Award winning Bow Grip, a short story collection for young adults called One In Every Crowd, and 2016’s Tomboy’s Guide to Survival.  Coyote regularly combines storytelling and music and has worked with a number of musicians including Veda Hille, Dan Mangan and Rae Spoon. Coyote has been a columnist for the gay magazines Xtra! and Xtra! West for a number of years and a writer-in-residence at numerous organizations.

In November 2015 Coyote did a TED talk in Vancouver entitled "We All Need a Safe Place to Pee," where they discussed the need for gender neutral bathrooms in all public places. In 2016, they delivered the Florence Bird Lecture at Carleton University titled "Neither, Nor: How to Circumnavigate the Gender Binary in Seven Thousand Easy Steps". Ivan also visits schools and has been doing so for fifteen years - telling stories that encourage talking and motivating students and staff to take action to foster safety and social justice in hallways, gymnasiums, and classrooms.

Spend an evening Up Close and Personal with Ivan Coyote on Wednesday, February 22. Seating is general admission with the lobby opening at 6:30 p.m., theatre doors at 7:15 p.m. and the performance starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are just $25 for all ages and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online at ticketpro.ca.

Revolutionary and Innovative Illusions Performed By Master Magicians

OUTERBRIDGE: Clockwork Mysteries "Grand Masters of Illusions” Will Wow Audience at Horizon Stage on February 11

A professionally orchestrated theatrical production with over twenty custom-designed illusions and world-class lighting and set design, OUTERBRIDGE: Clockwork Mysteries “Grand Masters of Illusion” is a high-energy magical adventure for both adult and family audiences. Recognized as one of the most creative and dynamic shows of its kind, critics have hailed Ted and Marion Outerbridge as “the most successful magicians in Canada” and “champions of magic”. Now these expert magicians are bringing their groundbreaking illusions back to Horizon Stage on Saturday, February 11 at 7:30 p.m.

As the largest and most successful touring illusion show in the country, Clockwork Mysteries has received both the 2011 Award of Excellence from Ontario Contact and the 2010 Touring Artist of the Year award from the B.C. Touring Council. This innovative production takes its audience on a bizarre and fascinating journey through time. Within seconds of taking the stage, the Outerbridges fuse their revolutionary illusions with split-second artistry and hold viewers spellbound.

With the help of an elaborate Victorian time machine, performers and spectators travel back in time together. The audience is invited into a mysterious clock tower equipped with a variety of timekeeping devices. They become part of a race against time, experience time accelerating and slowing down, and participate in predicting the contents of a time capsule. Keeping their audience enthralled from the first astonishing illusion to the spectacular finale, the Outerbridges create an experience that far exceeds the expectations of the observer.

Performing professionally since 1982, Ted Outerbridge has done everything from materializing Fortune 500 executives, to consulting for Cirque du Soleil, to creating the magic for the movie Switching Channels starring Kathleen Turner and Christopher Reeve. He has made over 100 television appearances, from Much Music to The Discovery Channel’s Mystery Hunters, and on his own TV special Magic with Ted Outerbridge. Ted’s dry sense of humor has resulted in return bookings at the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival, his charisma has led to repeat appearances on Princess Cruise ships, and his mastery of the art of grand illusion has enabled him to perform at the SkyDome in Toronto as well as on televised pre-game shows for the National Hockey League.

Marion joined Ted’s show as a dancer and lead assistant in 1999. She quickly became an integral part of the production, eventually becoming Ted’s partner, on and off the stage, when they married in 2006. Marion has performed the world over and speaks five languages fluently. A dancer in constant demand, she has performed in numerous North American productions from Nostalgie to We’ve Got Magic and Country 2000. In 1999 Marion made her film debut in The Whole Nine Yards with Bruce Willis and has since appeared in numerous film and television productions including Barney’s Version with Dustin Hoffman and White House Down with Maggie Gyllenhaal and Jamie Foxx.

The Outerbridges last wowed audiences at Horizon Stage in 2010 with Magical Moments in Time. Prepare to be taken on another magical journey through time by these “Grand Masters of Illusion” on Saturday, February 11. Tickets are $35 for Adults and $30 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through ticketpro.ca. Fun for everyone - we recommend this show for anyone age six or older who is ready to be mystified, amazed, and astounded

Wiggle and Giggle with Saskatchewan’s Queen of the Swing-Set Scene

Singing with Sylvia Will Charm Toddlers, Preschoolers, Kindergartners, and Their Adults on January 23

Sylvia Chave says that she started singing the day she was born. She’s all grown up now (with four grown-up children of her own) and she is thrilled to be able to share her music with youngsters all over the country.  Sylvia’s original songs stick in your head like bubble gum in your hair. Her lyrics offer an enlightening kid’s-eye view on significant issues of this day and age such as: blankie blues, napaphobia, snoring fathers, and cookie-cutting techniques. She answers age-old questions like: Why do bees go buzz? Is it possible to be quiet while your baby brother naps? and, How is it that Mama always knows best? If you have a child in your life who is under the age of six then you simply cannot miss Singing with Sylvia at Horizon Stage on Monday, January 23 at 10 a.m.

A concert by Sylvia is energetic and interactive. She has a knack for keeping little ones on their feet and dancing to the beat. With more costume changes than a toilet-training toddler Sylvia can go from pretty princess to bearded pirate in 4.5 seconds. Her travelling “Transformation Station” is jam-packed with vibrant creations that transport her, and her audiences, into a colourful world of make-believe. Whether dressed as a tropical calypso dancer with a tutti-frutti hat or a polka-dancing bohemian with a pizza on her head, Sylvia’s performances are fresh and funny!

Sylvia’s offbeat characters and unbridled love of performing weaves a special magic that allows her to create an amazing rapport with her young audiences.  Of course, the fact that she is just a tad off-center herself is a real bonus, because when she’s on stage, you’re never quite sure where this journey of laughter will take you.  Sylvia’s voice is an amazing instrument that she uses to create the haunting howls of a ghost, the gruff bark of a no nonsense pirate, the high pitched cackle of a chatty crow, and other wonderful characters.  Exuberant, original, and engaging, she leads her audiences in loud raucous choruses then hushes them with whisper and soothes them with the smooth liquid tones of a lullaby.

Born in Ontario, Sylvia moved to Saskatchewan after earning a degree in English from Lakehead University in Thunder Bay. As she raised her family she ran a daycare, was a librarian and a Teacher’s Assistant. But the performing bug nipped at her heels, and as her children grew older she began to follow her dream, first with the children’s duo Prairie Patch in the 1990s and now on her own. She pulls many of her song ideas from her own childhood and her children’s childhoods.

Two out of three people with peanut butter and jelly moustaches agree that Sylvia Chave is a superstar. Vancouver’s Axis Theatre Company Reinvents a Classic Fairy Tale

Hamelin, A New Fable, Teaches Kids About Keeping Promises, Courage, and Cooperation

Some modern children are so plugged in, busy, or programmed that they miss out on other valuable life experiences. Horizon Stage’s Family Matinee Series offers quality entertainment for 4 - 12 year olds that the adults in their life will enjoy as well. And the second performance in their 16/17 Family Series is no exception. Axis Theatre’s Hamelin, A New Fable on Sunday, January 22, is full of catchy tunes, funny jokes, and it teaches important life lessons to boot!

In 13th century Germany, Medieval Hamelin Town is way too big for its lederhosen. Governed by a spoiled Mayor, his Mommy, and stuffy corporate types who have no interest in its hard-working townsfolk, the town is primed to learn some significant lessons in life from 10-year-old twins Celeste and Ralph. When it seems that no one, other than their Opa Johannes, ever keeps their word, our heroes come up with a plan to make the grown-ups wake up and smell the strudel. After ridiculous new taxes render their tight-knit family homeless and desperate for help, they encounter a hapless “Minstrel”, a flute that has seen better days and of course, lots and lots of rats! With surprising plot twists,Hamelin, A New Fable, is a comedic, heart-tugging musical retelling of The Pied Piper of Hamelin, using masks and puppets in Axis Theatre’s unique physical theatre style.

Vancouver’s Axis Theatre Company has been performing in theatres and schools across North America and around the world for 40+ years. Enriching curriculum and drawing children into stories, they encourage young people to explore and appreciate shared community values and ideas in new and interesting ways. Their 57 original works have earned 17 Jessie Richardson Awards, A Betty Mitchell Award, and a Drama Desk Nomination for Unique Theatrical Experience.

Winner of a 2015 Jessie Richardson Award for Design Concept and Execution, Hamelin, A New Fable teaches kids about keeping promises versus breaking them, bullying and greed, courage, cooperation, and honor. The themes in the production support an understanding of the importance of contributing to community, solving problems in a peaceful way, defending human rights, and exercising democratic rights and responsibilities.

So spend a cozy afternoon soaking in some valuable culture with your family at Horizon Stage on Sunday, January 22.
