Canada’s Ballet Jörgen Presents Coppélia, a Comedy With Love

Toy Story-esque Ballet That Brings A Life-Sized Doll to Life Will Amuse and Delight Audiences of All Ages on March 2

Coppélia is one of the world’s oldest surviving ballets and one of the most performed comedic ballets. It is a daring, bold, playful story about a beautiful life-sized doll who comes to life and the men who fall in love with her. Touring British Columbia, Alberta, and Manitoba this winter, Canada’s Ballet Jörgen (CBJ) bring their contemporary retelling of this classic fairytale to Horizon Stage on Saturday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m.

Coppélia takes audiences into the mysterious mind of Dr. Coppélius, a lonely and disillusioned toy maker who wishes he could bring a perfect doll to life to become his perfect wife. He creates Coppélia, a life-sized dancing doll so gorgeous that Nathanael, one of the local villagers, falls madly in love with her. Nathaniel’s spurned sweetheart, Klara, enacts revenge by dressing as the doll and pretending to come to life to punish him.

Emotional and captivating, Coppélia is one of the best balletic representations of fantastical storytelling the world over and is one of CBJ’s most popular family ballets. Told through vibrant choreography, it features a set of large interlocking geometric shapes which are integrated into the production through intricate scene changes.

Choreographed by the award-winning Bengt Jörgen, CBJ’s Artistic Director and CEO, and set to the original score by Leo Delibes, Coppélia is an international co-production with The Hong Kong Ballet. It originally premiered in 2001 and audience members young and old have been thoroughly captivated and delighted by it ever since.

Canada’s Ballet Jörgen is a classical ballet company based in Toronto that aims to make ballet accessible and relevant to 21st century audiences. CBJ likes to tell Canadian stories and always reflect a Canadian identity in their programming. As an added bonus, the company’s local participant program will bring local young dancers from Spruce Grove and surrounding areas to join their professional dancers on stage. The local participant program allows the students (age 14+) the opportunity to experience being part of a professional production while also allowing the company to support the local dance community.

Bring your family to see Coppélia, a real life Toy Story told through dance, at Horizon Stage on Saturday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 for Adults and $30 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through Ticketpro.ca.

Go On a Musical Journey with an Incredible Classical Concert Pianist

Avan Yu will share his stories, inspirations, and extreme musical talent at Horizon Stage on February 25

A musician’s voice mirrors their path through life. Travels, influences, people, and encounters combine to create a unique story. Playing since he was five, and beginning his public career at age 14, Avan Yu has won competitions and awards, performed extensively throughout Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia, and worked with world-renowned conductors and orchestras. In his deeply personal program, Journeys, Avan speaks about his experiences as a pianist, plays milestone pieces from his major performances, and shares music by composers who have shaped his artistic growth. Demonstrating delicate nuances and great technical facilities, Avan is an expressive performer who plays with a passion and freedom rarely seen in someone so young. In a tour coordinated by Prairie Debut, Avan is performing concerts across Saskatchewan and Alberta this winter, stopping at Horizon Stage on Monday, February 25 at 7:30 p.m.

One of Canada’s most exciting young pianists, at age 17 Avan Yu became front page news as the youngest competitor ever to win the Canadian Chopin Competition. He achieved international recognition when he triumphed at the Sydney International Piano Competition in 2012, winning First Prize along with nine special awards. He was noticed by Pinchas Zukerman and Bramwell Tovey who invited him to perform with their respective orchestras, the National Arts Centre Orchestra and the Vancouver Symphony. Since then, Avan has appeared with Yo-Yo Ma, Rafael Fruehbeck de Burgos, Christian Arming, Juanjo Mena, Johannes Moser, and the Armida Quartet. He has performed at the Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall (New York), Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), the Philharmonie (Berlin), the Salle Cortot (Paris), and the Sydney Opera House.

From Hong Kong to Vancouver, to living in Berlin, Paris, and now New York, Avan’s destinations are a story of their own. His explorations have shaped both his life and his artistry. His latest recording of Liszt's piano transcriptions of Schubert's Winterreise and Schwanengesang won glowing reviews from critics and fans. Besides playing the piano, Avan has also written for the National Post, he loves studying languages, and in his spare time enjoys experimenting in the kitchen.

Currently, the Emeralds’ five members are Allan Broder on tenor saxophone and vocals, Wallis Petruk on tenor saxophone, violin, flute, clarinet and vocals, Don Remeika on drums and vocals, Terry Kole on rhythm guitar, banjo, vocals, and voice impressions and Rick Morgenstern on keyboards, bass, vocals and voice impressions. A Curious Tale of Fingerpickin’ Fury - Hit Fringe Show Comes to Horizon Stage

Chase Padgett brings Nashville Hurricane to Spruce Grove on Saturday, February 2

Legendary Fringe performer Chase Padgett (Six Guitars) returns with another masterful one-man play with some music mixed in. 40 years ago a mysterious acoustic guitarist appeared out of nowhere, conquered the music industry, and vanished without a trace… until now. Padgett becomes manager, mother, mentor, and the prodigy himself, as each tells their side of the rise, demise, and resurrection of the best damn guitar player you’ve never heard of; the Nashville Hurricane. Horizon Stage is excited to present Nashville Hurricane on Saturday, February 2 at 7:30 p.m.

During the course of this 75 minute show the audience learns about Henry Waltrip, aka the Nashville Hurricane. From his humble trailer park beginnings alongside his white-trash mother, Brenda, to the crazy gigs on the road with his blues playing mentor, Tyrone, the stories and songs unfold into hilarious rants about love and music, ending with a blazing acoustic version of “Devil Went Down to Georgia” that will blow you away!

Chase Padgett has been an actor and musician for over 15 years. While attending the University of Central Florida he studied and worked at the Sak Comedy Lab in Orlando Fl, one of the best improv companies in the southeast. After graduating in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music he worked at Walt Disney World and Universal Studios in various comedic and musical roles including custom song writing for special events.

In 2010 Chase premiered his first solo show, 6 Guitars, which quickly became one of the most successful shows in the history of the North American Fringe Festival circuit; receiving numerous awards and setting box office records in almost every town it plays in. His second solo show, Nashville Hurricane, has received a similar amount of awards, accolades, and audience attendance levels. In 2014 Chase was hand-picked to perform a sketch comedy showcase for NBC in Los Angeles where he worked with some of the best comedy talent in the field. When not touring or auditioning in L.A. he resides in Portland, OR where he can be seen working with the Curious Comedy Theatre as a writer, performer, improviser, and musician. Chase recently became a honourary Albertan when he got engaged to an Edmontonian.

From Nostalgic Ballads to Upbeat Anthems Their Harmonies Are Stunning

The Young Novelists Bring Quirky, Rootsy, Rocky Folk Music to Horizon Stage on January 25

The Young Novelists are a Toronto-based band fronted by husband and wife Graydon James and Laura Spink. Since 2009 they have played stages across the U.S. and Canada, released four full-length albums, won numerous awards, and received continuous praise for their unmatched, effortless harmonies. With a sound that has been compared to everyone from The Band to ‘pre-weirdness’ Wilco, their personal mission is to create sad songs for happy people — whether that means nostalgic ballads or upbeat anthems. The Young Novelists’ ability to tell familiar stories with a modern folk edge make them, and their songs, instant classics. The Young Novelists are touring Alberta in January 2019 and will be performing at Horizon Stage on Friday, January 25 at 7:30 p.m.

When they first met, Graydon and Laura had no idea that they would be married one day — much less touring the world together. They both grew up in Ontario; she in Peterborough and he in Verona, a small eastern town with a population of a mere 1,800. They both moved to Waterloo for university, where they met via community theatre; but it wasn’t until Graydon decided to refocus his career from drummer to front man that they combined their talents musically. After recruiting some musicians, and touring the east coast as a six-piece, the band became Graydon James & The Young Novelists. Between 2011 and 2012, they released two albums: live at dublin st. church and in the year you were born. However, it soon became clear that Laura was taking on more lead vocal duties. By the time they recorded their 2015 album, made us strangers, it made the most sense to simply shorten their name to The Young Novelists. Happily,  made us strangers, landed them a Canadian Folk Music Award for New/Emerging Artist, a nomination for Vocal Group of the Year, and reached top 20 on both !earshot and Stingray Music folk charts.

2016 was a huge year for The Young Novelists — Laura quit her job as a scientist, they packed their things (and their five year old son Simon), and went on a massive North American tour. After over 100 shows, including a 10-week stint on the road, the pair returned to Toronto to start working on their next album and draw inspiration from their travels. They recorded their 2018 album, in city & country, with the help of JUNO-winning producer Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire, Leonard Cohen, The Wooden Sky). Recorded at Bilerman’s Hotel2Tango studios in Montreal, the duo returned to their classic him-and-her vocals, with Graydon playing acoustic guitar and Laura on percussion and vibraphone.

Don’t miss The Young Novelists at Horizon Stage on Friday, January 25 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 for Adults and $30 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through Ticketpro.ca.

Six Guitar Masters Play Classic Rock, Spaghetti Western Soundtracks, and More

Montréal Guitare Trio and California Guitar Trio Will Make You Appreciate Guitar Music in a Whole New Way at Horizon Stage on January 18

Montréal Guitare Trio (MG3) and California Guitar Trio (CGT) are both powerhouse guitar trios independently. Now they have decided to link their passion, and their talent, in order to create a stunning evening of guitar music; a sextet made in Heaven. This delightful concert provides the opportunity for audiences to see, and hear, the six virtuoso guitarists devoting themselves to becoming one voice. The program features the music of legendary groups such as Queen, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Rush, famous spaghetti western music by Sergio Leone, and several original compositions. Mostly instrumental, with occasional vocals, an evening spent with MG3 and CG3 will make you listen to, and enjoy, guitar music in a whole new way. Horizon Stage is excited to present Montréal Guitare Trio and California Guitar Trio on Friday, January 18 at 7:30 p.m.

In addition to dazzling musicianship and interplay, MG3 and CGT shows are full of captivating stories and humor that enable concertgoers to feel like they’re part of the music, not just spectators. The sextet’s goal is to transcend their instruments, so that people focus on the music first, and their considerable technical prowess second. During these groundbreaking, highly-entertaining shows, the trios perform inventive arrangements of each others’ repertoire, alongside new music for guitar sextets.

Described by the CBC as the "hottest guitar ensemble in Canada”, MG3 has established itself as a musical force to be reckoned with. For over 20 years, the trio's virtuosity, rigor, creativity, and impressive stage presence have been winning over audiences around the world. The trio, composed of guitarists Sébastien Dufour, Glenn Lévesque and Marc Morin, have given hundreds of concerts in some of the most prestigious venues across North America, Europe, New Zealand, and Australia. Winner of the 2011 Opus Award for concert of the year in the Jazz & World Music category, MG3 has released seven albums including their most recent, Danzas, in 2017.

The universe of guitar knows no boundaries for CGT. Since 1991, the group has enthralled listeners with a singular sound that fearlessly crisscrosses genres. The trio’s questing spirit drives it to explore the intersections between rock, jazz, classical, and world music. Comprised of Bert Lams, Hideyo Moriya, and Paul Richards, the group has established a unique, personal connection with audiences. Their 16 albums, streamed over 65 million times on Pandora, offer diverse snapshots of their mercurial muse. The trio’s most recent release, Komorebi, showcases its acoustic side, with beautiful lush originals and innovative cover arrangements of the Beatles, Beach Boys, and more. The trio’s output has made a major global impact, having served as the soundtrack for Olympics coverage, and programs on CNN, CBS, NBC, and ESPN. They have fans in high places too: NASA used their music to wake the crew aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour.

Prepare yourself for an evening of incredible guitar music with Montréal Guitare Trio and California Guitar Trio, at Horizon Stage on Friday, January 18 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 for Adults and $30 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online by visiting through Ticketpro.ca.

Heartwarming Christmas Variety Show at Horizon Stage

Three Time JUNO Nominee Brings Amero Little Christmas to Spruce Grove on December 1

Don Amero is an engaging storyteller, songwriter, and performer who has been touring and speaking across Canada for over 10 years. He has released six albums, collaborated with Brett Kissel, received three Juno nominations, and won three Aboriginal People’s Choice Awards and a Canadian Folk Music Award. Amero Little Christmas is a fresh new take on the classic Christmas variety show. It celebrates the holidays with a combination of original songs and Don’s take on familiar and traditional favourites. Touring Alberta and Manitoba this holiday season, Don hopes to encourage those who attend his concerts to pause, reflect, and spend quality time with the people they love. Horizon Stage is pleased to present Amero Little Christmas on Saturday, December 1, at 7:30 p.m.

Raised in the notoriously tough north end of Winnipeg, Don faced his share of adversity growing up. Although surrounded by poverty, gangs, drugs, and violence, his life was also tempered by love and support which enabled him to thrive and find his passion in music. When Don was 14 years old he discovered that he had a gift for singing and performing. Around that same time his personal life was in turmoil. He found solace in learning to play music on his father’s old guitar. That music resonated with the longing in his soul and the inner pain he felt; it became his therapy. Over the years Don’s passion grew, and he started to focus on creating music that he hoped could also be medicine for others.

At 27 years old Don decided to give music his best shot - full time. He quit his day job, and began his journey into a career in the music industry. Don’s tireless work ethic, ambition, and determination, has earned the respect of fellow artists and audiences alike. His powerful vocals, a lovable stage presence, and soulful sound have made him a sought after performer who genuinely connects with his audience with ease and charm. A true musical talent without the rock-star attitude, Don’s messages of encouragement, positivity, and beauty - and his desire to get out and chat with everyone - impresses fans wherever he goes.

Immerse yourself fully in the warmth of the holiday spirit with Amero Little Christmas at Horizon Stage on Saturday, December 1 at 7:30 p.m.  A limited number of seats are still available. Tickets are $35 for Adults and $30 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through Ticketpro.ca.

Luke McMaster Brings His Icons of Soul Project to Horizon Stage on November 17

Luke McMaster has a silky smooth voice that’s perfect for crooning, and he does a lot of that in his new show, Icons of Soul. Formerly one half of the gold-selling Canadian pop duo McMaster & James, Luke is taking the Motown and soul influences that have always filled his music to a new level. Icons of Soul uniquely marries contemporary songwriting with legendary hit songwriters.  Audiences will be treated to brand new music co-written with iconic R & B songwriters, hear fresh covers of some of Motown’s greatest hits, and enjoy favourites from Luke’s own catalogue, including his smash hit “Good Morning Beautiful” (#3 US Billboard AC). Experience the Music and Culture of Canada’s North

New North Collective Celebrate and Explore Their Traditional and Contemporary Roots at Horizon Stage on October 12

New North Collective is an ensemble of performing artists from Yukon and Northwest Territories who explore, create, and celebrate the music of Northern Canada. The current collective is made up of spoken word artist/bassist Pat Braden and composer/performer Carmen Braden from NWT; singer/songwriter Diyet from the Kluane First Nation, guitarist/songwriter Graeme Peters, and percussionist Robert Van Lieshout from Yukon; and guest artist, Leanne Goose, from Inuvik who is currently studying at MacEwan University. New North Collective are excited to be touring “Southern” Canada and to be performing at Horizon Stage on Friday, October 12 at 7:30 p.m.

The New North Collective came into being in 2015 after its members performed together in various configurations at multiple events and festivals. Everyone has successful individual music careers so they bring a diversity of styles, language, and experience to the collective. Together, they explore their ideas of north - from the land to the people; from the traditional to the contemporary. Their shared music takes an in-depth look at being a northern person and a northern artist with the impact of geography and community on the art they create collaboratively. Diverse and skillful, they cover a multitude of genres including jazz, folk, new music, spoken word, and rock.

Pat Braden previously performed at Horizon Stage in 2011. He is a soft-spoken storyteller and songwriter who weaves text with musical elements to paint exquisitely beautiful images of the northern land and its people. Pat studied at Grant MacEwan Community College and returned to Yellowknife in 1984 to perform with northern artists and bands both in the studio and on territorial and national stages.

Carmen Braden’s vocal, instrumental, and electroacoustic music is greatly tied to her soundscape. She draws from her environment by examining natural phenomena through sonic, visual, sensual and scientific ways of understanding. Her creative research has led her into deep study of ice on Great Slave Lake, as well as raven calls, bedrock, and different qualities of light. Carmen often collaborates with artists who work in other mediums like dance, theatre, film, and story-telling.

Diyet was born in a tent and was brought up on the ancestral lands of her people in Canada’s Yukon Territory. Coming from a family rooted in traditions but tempered with a good sense of adventurous hippie attitudes, she creates a musical presence that is as diverse as her Southern Tutchone, Tlingit, Japanese and Scottish heritage. She acquired a degree in music and is a published songwriter in Vancouver. When the pull of the North was too strong, she packed her bags, and her husband (co-performer Robert Van Lieshout) and moved back. Robert and Diyet also perform together in the band Diyet and the Love Soldiers

Graeme Peters is the lead member of Yukon's rock band Speed Control.  He has years of training in classical piano, attended the University of Toronto's prestigious Jazz Program, co-wrote a rock opera, and is a highly sought after touring and studio musician. Graeme has recorded and played with Tanya Tagaq and Canadian jazz greats Ingrid Jensen and Terry Promane. He was a member of the Peters Drury Trio when they performed at Horizon Stage 2002.

Leanne Goose is from Canada's Western Arctic town, Inuvik, Northwest Territories. An eclectic entertainer, Leanne wears many hats: singer/songwriter, musician, producer, arts and cultural manager, and storyteller. Her music is a combination of storytelling set to folk/country-blues and influences of her Inuvialuit and Dene culture. Her style is a reflection of the land and people she calls home; big, bold and ready for adventure.

Specifically designed to discard stereotypes and push boundaries, New North Collective’s multi-media show is simultaneously crowd-pleasing and thought-provoking. Experience all that is New North Collective at Horizon Stage on Friday, October 12 at 7:30 p.m. - tickets are $35 for Adults and $30 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through Ticketpro.ca.

Lisa Brokop Presents: Legendary Ladies of Country

Canadian Country Star Will Perform Her New Tribute Show at Horizon Stage on September 28 and October 1

Hot on the heels of The Patsy Cline Project, comes Lisa Brokop’s brand new show, Legendary Ladies of Country! This presentation features songs from many of the greatest female country singers of our time including Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Tanya Tucker, and Emmylou Harris. Lisa will tell stories about what these songs have meant to her and the influences that these ladies have had on her career. And, Lisa’s fans will enjoy hearing a few of her own hits as well! Originally scheduled for one show on Friday, September 28, tickets have sold so well (Friday is almost sold out) that Horizon Stage has added a second Legendary Ladies of Country performance on Monday, October 1 at 7:30 p.m.

In a day and age when many artists flicker for a moment before fading out of the spotlight, Lisa Brokop has spent over 20 remarkable years singing, songwriting and performing. What’s the secret to her success?  “I love what I do,” she says. “Every note I sing, whether in the studio or from the stage, is true.  It hasn’t always been an easy road. There have been many curves, bumps and detours.  But really, it is the love of the music that motivates each step I take in the business. It keeps me moving forward.  And I think fans feel and appreciate that love.”

Lisa’s love affair with performing began when she was very young. Even as a baby, it was clear that she was special—she was singing before she could talk! Growing up in suburban Vancouver, she joined her mother and brother on stage when she was seven, performing everything from polkas to Kenny Rogers’ classics. By age 12 Lisa was sitting in with other Vancouver bands, going professional at age 15 when she joined a touring band. A year later she began her solo career, releasing “Daddy Sing To Me”, the first successful single from her independent debut album, My Love, in 1991.

At the age of 19, Lisa landed the lead female role in the feature film Harmony Cats. The movie, in which she played a country singer who leaves home in search of a big break in Nashville, proved to be prophetic. Shortly after filming wrapped, and on the strength of her very first Nashville showcase, Lisa was signed to Capitol Records.

Vancouver’s Hippest Funk Band Tours to Spruce Grove

Brickhouse Brings Their Original Blues, Funk, and Classic R & B Covers to Horizon Stage on Friday, April 27

With original, funky tracks and cleverly covered classic R&B tunes, Vancouver’s Brickhouse blends classic and modern (Blue Funk) with an ease that makes hearing and seeing them an addictive experience. For 12 years, Brickhouse was the official late-night house band for Vancouver’s famous Yale Hotel. It was on the Yale stage and through their popular Blues Cruise harbor tour concerts, that they built a legion of fans as diverse as you can get: hipsters, university students, baby boomers, tourists, and other musicians. Everyone who has experienced the band live has grown to love their brand of groovy, bluesy, funky music. Horizon Stage is excited to offer the Brickhouse experience to local fans on Friday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m.

Known for almost-hypnotically melding the mind, body, and soul, Brickhouse audiences become part of a fantastic live music experience. With a list of original material that rivals the number of keys on a full size piano, they deliver a message that attracts the young at heart. The Brickhouse experience is inclusive, not exclusive, which means all are welcome to the party! With over 1000 members on their facebook fan page, and 200+ live shows a year, it’s no wonder that it sometimes feels like their fans choose the set list. Rob Bracken (lead vocals and harmonica), Ray Keesh (bass guitar), Ed Johnson (drums, percussion, and backing vocals), Oldrich (OZ) Zitek (saxophone and backing vocals), Neil Cruickshank (guitar and backing vocals) and Darryl Havers (Hammond organ, keyboards, and backing vocals), put on an intense show full of great tunes that will get inside your head and stay there.

In 2016 Brickhouse recorded their most recent CD, Future. Going into the studio was a great bonding experience for Rob, Ray, Neil, Darryl, Oz and Ed. It energized the band as they celebrated over a decade of making great music together. Future is a collection of songs that grew out of gigging and collaborating live and, although Rob wrote just about every one, the band gave each other enough space to let their individual musicianship affect the overall vibe of every tune. That IS Brickhouse’s brand.

Seeing Brickhouse live is considered one of the Top 10 coolest things you can do in Vancouver and now it’s also one of the coolest things that you can do in the Edmonton area. Catch them at Horizon Stage in Spruce Grove on Friday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 for Adults and $30 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through Ticketpro.ca.

"These guys never get boring!  Whether or not you have got the blues or the rhythm,
make it your mandate to experience some (of their) soulful R&B…”
- John Tanner, Vancouver Observer

“For a guaranteed draw and a happy crowd, it’s a ‘lock’ with Brickhouse."
- Keith Alexander, AD, Edge of the World Music Festival

Annie Lou Stops in Spruce Grove on Their ‘End Zone’ CD Release Tour

Juno Nominated Folk and Bluegrass Band Scheduled to Perform at Horizon Stage on Friday, March 23

Annie Lou is the project of Anne Louise Genest, an artist who walks with the spirit of an old storyteller, creating songs steeped in the flavours of old-time mountain, Appalachian, traditional country, and bluegrass music. She has spent years chronicling the rural life-paths of Canada, writing songs that tell the tales of the hard-won victories of everyday men and women. Annie Lou has toured major festivals and venues across the country and has been nominated for a Juno and several Canadian Folk Music and Western Canadian Music awards. Horizon Stage is pleased to present Annie Lou on Friday, March 23 at 7:30 p.m.

With humour, grace, and warmth, Annie Lou takes the stage with banjo and guitar, and invites you in to her colourful world of original music rooted in melodic traditions and delivered with an inspired energy and spark. She paints vibrant musical landscapes where you can laugh, cry, dance, reflect and connect with ballads, tunes, and songs inspired by lives and times and ups and downs. Her beautifully creative songs range from rousing and boisterous to gentle and poignant. They map a homescape of hard-drinking grandmas, rural dancehalls, blue collar fashions, small towns, and big cities. All are delivered with Genest’s vocal warmth; evocative of the sweet tones of Kate and Anna McGarrigle blended with the raw emotion of Hazel Dickens.

Annie Lou is releasing her fourth album, End Zone, a gorgeous collection of new songs that draw deep from the well, filling the bucket with rich melody and wry wisdom. No, it’s not about football. Most of the material for the album was written during the last months of her mother's life, and the title track is an exploration of that time when the end is near, but not quite. The album features a guest cast of Canadian acoustic innovators, including Andrew Collins on mandolin and guitar, Max Heineman on upright bass and vocals, Sarah Hamilton on fiddle and vocals, John Showman and Trent Freeman on fiddle, Frank Evans on banjo, Burke Carroll on pedal steel, and Ivan Rosenberg on dobro. Real, raw, and deeply honest, End Zone is a magical addition to the Annie Lou catalogue.

Annie Lou is headed out on a Western Canada CD Release tour this month, with Collins, Hamilton, and Heineman in tow. Together they are a tight vocal and instrumental unit that offers superb musicianship and an infectious delight in their craft. In live performance the band gallops along with joyful danceable precision, enticing audiences with twin fiddles, banjo, three and four part harmonies, call and response, and compelling instrumental solos.

Touring B.C., Saskatchewan, and Alberta, Annie Lou’s only concert in the Edmonton area will be at Horizon Stage in Spruce Grove on Friday, March 23 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 for Adults and $30 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through Ticketpro.ca.

“Genest’s remarkable songwriting about the tales of rural Canadiana…
(they) move across a range of emotions and each evokes the right texture."

Still/Falling Offers an Eye-Opening Look Inside The Teen Mental Health Crisis

Horizon Stage Presents Green Thumb Theatre’s Groundbreaking Play on Monday, March 19

Still/Falling tells the story of Nina. Nina has a great life. She loves her family, she does well in school, and her friends are awesome. But suddenly Nina starts feeling… off, and she finds herself slipping into a dark reality she cannot understand, let alone articulate to the people around her. Still/Falling follows Nina as she tries to come to terms with what it means to struggle with anxiety and depression, and to rise above it with as much strength, and as few scars, as possible. A realistic, honest, and bitingly funny look at the difference between ‘teen angst’ and mental illness and the ways vulnerable kids can start to find their way out of the dark. Horizon Stage is honoured to present Still/Falling on Monday, March 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Vancouver’s Green Thumb Theatre chose to produce Still/Falling to encourage conversation and awareness and to help students gain a deeper understanding of mental health, and especially how it can affect themselves and their peers. Green Thumb Theatre creates and produces plays that explore social issues relevant to the lives of children, youth and young adults. They provide theatre that celebrates the language and stories of today’s generation and culture to stimulate empathy, debate and critical thinking; challenging audiences to re-examine their beliefs and prejudices and to define their feelings and aspirations.

Mental illness indirectly affects all Canadians at some time through a family member, friend, or colleague and 20% of Canadians will personally experience a mental illness in their lifetime. Young Canadians are suffering from rising levels of anxiety, stress, depression and even suicide. The number of 12-19 year olds in Canada at risk for developing depression is a staggering 3.2 million. Once depression is recognized help can make a difference for 80% of people who are affected, allowing them to get back to their regular activities. But, sadly, in Canada only 1 out of 5 children who need mental health services receives them.

If you work with teenagers, love a teenager, or are a teenager then you must see Still/Falling at Horizon Stage on Monday, March 19. Tickets are $10 for all ages and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, or online through Ticketpro.ca. Seating is general admission and the show is recommended for ages 12+.  Running time is 50 minutes. There will be a question and answer period with the artist after the show. Still/Falling is presented in partnership with Spruce Grove and Stony Plain FCSS. If ticket price is a barrier, subsidies are available for eligible families by calling 780-962-7618 in Spruce Grove or 780-963-8583 in Stony Plain.

“This performance is a bold, moving, and compelling portrayal of a typical adolescent girl struggling
with anxiety and depressions. I was impressed by the quality and accuracy
of the mental health messages communicated throughout the play…”
- Ekin Blackwell, Clinical Psychologist, Anxiety BC

“This is an incredibly important work - not just for teens to see- but I think necessary for parents to see… if parents of young people could see this play they might be moved… to offer help and understanding to their children instead of getting mad at them.”
- Deborah Roberts, Parent

Twists and Turns, A Dashing Hero, and a Dastardly Villain

DuffleBag Theatre Brings A Giggle-Inducing Production of Robin Hood to Horizon Stage March 4

Known for their retellings of fairy tales and classic stories, DuffleBag Theatre is a Family Matinee favourite at Horizon Stage. This time around they’re re-working the legend of Robin Hood, and there are sure to be plenty of giggles and guffaws as they pull audience members up on stage and turn them into the stars of the show. They tickle kids’ funny bones and keep the grown-ups entertained too, not always an easy feat. Come play with DuffleBag Theatre at Horizon Stage on Sunday, March 4 at 2 p.m.

While the King is away, the people of England suffer under the oppressive rule of his tax-happy brother, Prince John. Only a straight arrow like Robin Hood, the best archer in the land, can save England! By stealing from the rich and giving back to the poor, Robin keeps the spirit of justice alive, with the help of a few friends along the way, including Maid Marian, Friar Tuck, and Little John. But what if the Prince and the dreaded Sheriff of Nottingham lay a trap for our hero? With all the humour and fun you come to expect, DuffleBag hits the mark with this on-target tale of derring-do!

Since 1992, The "Nearly World-Famous" DuffleBag Theatre has traveled the globe, performing over 600 shows annually at theatres, schools, and festivals across North America and beyond! There are over 15 different shows in the company's current repertoire and all are performed with the same sense of fun, innovation, and participation that audiences (almost) the world over have come to expect! Called one of the most exciting and fun phenomena to come out of the vibrant Canadian children’s entertainment scene. DuffleBag works to build their young audience’s love of the basic stories of our culture, readying them for imaginative maturity. Past DuffleBag productions in Spruce Grove include Robin Hood (2009), Cinderella (2013), and Snow White (2016). And while their shows are recommended for kids aged 4 -10, no matter what your age, you’re going to have a good time and enjoy some belly laughs if you come to see them.

Enjoy an amusing interactive Family Matinee theatre experience at Horizon Stage on Sunday, March 4 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 for all ages and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through Ticketpro.ca. Folk + Rock + Growl = Lion Bear Fox

Three powerful, honest, and soulful voices sing dynamic songs at Horizon Stage on March 3

One part folk, one part rock, with a pinch of gospel and a dash of growl, Vancouver’s Lion Bear Fox boasts acoustic guitars, buzzing electrics, and screaming keys. All of this is anchored by rich percussion and thrilling harmonies. With a name that is derived from their “spirit animals” this trio’s sound harkens back to an era when the song itself was paramount. Christopher Arruda, Cory Woodward, and Ryan McMahon were all solo artists who joined forces in 2012, released a CD together, and have been touring relentlessly ever since. Lion Bear Fox are looking forward to bringing their spirited rock/folk mix to Horizon Stage on Saturday, March 3.

Chris, Cory, and Ryan have three decades of solo career experience combined between them. At an impromptu show in Winnipeg in 2012 they started joining in on each other’s songs and quickly realized that it was time for a change; and thus Lion Bear Fox was born.  In 2013 Lion Bear Fox was selected as one of the top 20 unsigned bands in British Columbia as part of the Peak Performance Project. That same year they released their self-produced debut EP, We’d Be Good Men. Described as a musical force of nature that’s sure to be around for a lifetime, Lion Bear Fox have made appearances at Canadian Music Week, the Mission Folk Festival, and The Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver. They have shared stages with artists like Tom Wilson, Good For Grapes, Elliot Brood, and Kim Mitchell. In February 2017 they released their second CD, the self-titled Lion Bear Fox.

“When we perform, people experience three powerful, honest and soulful voices that will take them on a roller coaster ride of dynamically pleasing songs,” says Woodward. “Each one’s a journey, and we welcome everyone with open arms to dance wild, scream and sing into the night and experience one of the greatest self-made gifts we can give ourselves, pure uninhibited joy.”

Ride Lion Bear Fox’s rumbling musical roller coaster at Horizon Stage on Saturday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 for Adults and $30 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through Ticketpro.ca.

“One of the most appealing things about this group, is how easily they seem to meld so many different genres of music into their sound without it feeling overwhelming.”

Not Your Average Chamber Music Ensemble

Proteus Saxophone Quartet Brings Energy and Intensity to Horizon Stage on February 17

Proteus Saxophone Quartet is redefining the traditional chamber music experience with their high energy, intense, and varied performances. Named after the god of the sea, Proteus Saxophone Quartet explores numerous instrumental combinations of the saxophone family through the creation and performance of chamber music. Proteus Saxophone Quartet is comprised of four Canadian saxophonists who met while living and studying in Paris in 2011. Since their formation they developed an immediate artistic bond and vision and have committed themselves to presenting lively, diverse, and beautiful concerts. As a quartet they have performed throughout Canada, France, and the United States and are happy to be performing in Alberta and Saskatchewan this month on a tour coordinated by Prairie Debut. Experience Proteus Saxophone Quartet Up Close and Personal at Horizon Stage on Saturday, February 17, 2018.

Without adhering to a singular aesthetic or stylistic genre, Proteus Saxophone Quartet promotes collaboration with diverse artists in an attempt to advance new works for saxophone quartets. They work with composers or performers throughout the creation process. Their concert will include works from the classical saxophone canon, popular tunes, and transcriptions and arrangements of music written for other genres. By programming interesting and eclectic concerts, they aim to entertain and share with the public the history of the saxophone and saxophone quartet repertoire. Their programs are inspired by the saxophone’s capabilities and diversity, drawing from its early acceptance into popular and jazz music, as well as into the mainstream of the classical music genre.

As educators, Proteus Saxophone Quartet has performed school concerts and University masterclasses as part of their ongoing commitment to work with and promote chamber music to students. Often changing saxophones or staging during concerts, they benefit from these pauses by speaking to and connecting with their audiences by explaining concepts, ideas and working relationships which contribute to the compositions aimed at enhancing the concert experience. Quartet members Tommy Davis, Holly Caigny, Mark Michalak, and Michael Morimoto are all highly educated, well respected members of Canada’s chamber concert community.

Tommy Davis regularly performs on six members of the saxophone family. He has a Masters of Music from the Université de Montréal. Holly De Caigny received a Bachelor of Music from the University of British Columbia and a Masters degree in Calgary. She currently divides her time between Calgary and Edmonton where she is pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts in Saxophone Performance at the University of Alberta. Mark Michalak has a Masters of Music degree from the University of Calgary. He has competed in several international music competitions and is highly sought after as a performer, instructor, clinician, and conductor. Michael Morimoto started his musical studies in piano and switched to the saxophone. He received his Master of Music from the University of British Columbia and has been a featured soloist in many ensembles.

Immerse yourself in glorious saxophone music with Proteus Saxophone Quartet at Horizon Stage on Saturday, February 17 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 for Adults and $30 for Students and Seniors and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through Ticketpro.ca. Silver Screen Scoundrels Pair Great Music with Vaudeville-Style Silent Films

Enjoy Live Country Blues, Gospel, Ragtime, Swing and Lots of Laughs at This Unique Show

During the silent film era, from the 1890s to the late 1920s, a pianist, organist, or small orchestra played music to accompany films with no synchronized recorded sound or spoken dialogue. The Silver Screen Scoundrels perform original Country Blues, Gospel, Ragtime, and Swing music as accompaniment for their own, custom-produced, comedic black and white silent films. Horizon Stage is pleased to present the Silver Screen Scoundrels at a special weekday matinee concert on Thursday, February 8.

Brandon Isaak plays multiple instruments; guitars, harmonica, drums, kazoo and piano, but not all at the same time. He is the lead singer of the Silver Screen Scoundrels and writes most of the songs they perform. As a solo artist Brandon won a Maple Blues Award for Best Acoustic Performer in Canada. He has recorded several albums and has been nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award and multiple Maple Blues Awards. Besides performing with the Silver Screen Scoundrels, Brandon also performs as a "One Man Band", and with other musical friends. His most recent album was with Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne and Tim Williams. What separates Brandon from the rest of the pack is his ability to connect with and involve the audience.

Keith Picot plays bass with passion and backs up Brandon on vocals. He has won a Maple Blues Award for Best Bass Player in Canada and has performed with many other artists including Western Canada's Best Rockabilly Band, Cousin Harley who thrilled enthusiastic fans at Horizon Stage in 2015. Off stage, you can find Keith at his "Hek's Half Acre Silent Film Studio" where he writes, produces, and directs silent films.

Re-live the classic silent film era with a modern twist. Don’t miss The Silver Screen Scoundrels at Horizon Stage on Thursday, February 8 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $25 for all ages and may be purchased at the City Hall Ticket Centre (315 Jespersen Ave), by phone at 780-962-8995 or 1-888-655-9090, and online through Ticketpro.ca.

An impressive multi-sensory experience was enjoyed by those who attended… Brandon Isaak and Keith Picot had the audience rolling with laughter with their candid humour and interaction… It’s a show that shouldn’t be missed.”
- Quesnel Observer

They are a modern portal back through time, down the telegraph wires of entertainment. Their show is more than a tribute concert to a bygone era. It is a multimedia, multisensory mashup of movies on a screen
